Cj dies sometimes
I'm new here and new to the jeep world. I bought a 1975 cj5. On the way home it died and backfired. I noticed it did not have a gas vent hose so I put one on. Then tonight while showing it off it died again. Fuel gauge is broke so I put 5 gallons on it. Any ideas out there?

What carb does it have? Is it able to idle properly?

Idles fine. After it sets for a minute it goes on. I will have to answer the carb question tomorrow. Sorry. It just shuts down.

Is it able to start back up right away? If not that might be an ignition thing then. When is the last time you replaced the Ignition Control Module?

It has the 258 in line 6 and a carter carb

Ah, so this is a completely different thing to you then. It's a classic arrangement that probably hasn't been overhauled since it was built. There's a lot I can suggest but there's a lot more to check. It's too much work until the actual problem can be identified. Keep an eye on how the engine behaves. Pay close attention to the ignition system behavior. How it dies, if it starts hard or acts like it has a bad coil or sounds out of time...Things like that.
You also seem to have an issue with venting fuel. Did the new hose help at all? Does the tank require a vented gas cap?

The vented hose issue helped with losing fuel on turns and take offs. It is vented cap. My father in law said it seems to be out of timing. Gonna put a light on it Monday. I would love to find a complete wiring diagram of the entire jeep and do that first. Is slack in steering common

@daemonforce. I also just noticed 2 vacuum hoses missing from the carb. 1 sucks and 1 blows

Are they just small vacuum ports? Seal them off with caps. If they're the big ones on the front of the carb you need to tee them together and then plumb that into the big open port on your charcoal canister. Some guys cap the big port on the rear of the carb, I just plumb it into my rear PCV.

They are 2 small ones. One on left and one on right. I will plug them

Probably a good idea. This engine will sputter and constantly hiss when there's a gigantic vacuum leak like that.
Yeah, cute little vacuum leaks that cause endless sputtering, hissing and intermittent death. I would cap them off and then check the engine timing. It's probably in the right spot but who knows? I'm not used to seeing that kind of mounting base though. That looks like the 232 intake. Is that a YF Carter? You have a single barrel carb on a 258? I've always been curious about how well that would run. A lot of people with the more common 2 barrel Carters still complain that it's not enough for this old engine. I'm still on the fence about that argument and they'll preach Motorcraft until the cows come home but I think there's a certain element of unique operation lost when going to that. I would say if you can keep that engine from sputtering and dying when it only has a single barrel carb, you're pretty good at something. O_o

The lower one goes to the distributor vacuum advance. Plug the upper one for now.
