Chattering?

95 Cherokee Sport 4.0 Ltr
The valve , rockers are making one helluva noise but the oil is up and good, could there be a more severe problem going on?

The Jeep engines 2.5 and 4.0 are know for valve train noise as they age. So a couple of things can be done. You can sustitute one quart of oil for atf on your oil change and it will clean up some old residue. Then change again within 500 - 1000 miles and put in quality oil. Others will run some Marvel Mystery oil. There are several brands. Or you can go the other way and replace the push rods and rocker arms clean up the area and put the cover back on oil change and see what happpens.

Noise is pretty normal. Try using a lighter weight oil, I use 5w30 and it quiets things down. You can try an oil flush product but stick with chevron or like chemical company, not the gimmick crap. Sea foam also works really well, put 1/3 in the vac line, 1/3 in the gas 1/3 in the oil. Run for 5, let sit for 15, run for 15 and watch all the crap blow out the exhaust.

What brand of oil filter are you using?

Marvel Mystery Oil substituted for a quart of oil helps clean up the lifters.
