CCJ-3A Distributor Problem?

I took my CJ-3A over to my buddy, who replaced the major gaskets and seals etc. After putting the engine back together, the engine will run well sometimes, and not others. Last night he told me that when he pushes down on the distributor, it seems to run better and will idle for some time. Just when he thinks it's ready to go, it stalls and will not start. He's tried to tighten down the distributor bolts several times. The problem keeps coming back. Any ideas or toughts on what might be wrong?

Thanks, Chris
