Carrier bearings ?

Has anybody ever replaced there carrier bearings ? My 97GC Dana 35 rear-end I noticed when I'm driving about 30-40mph on dry pavment that it's just seems tobe noisy ? I've had the cover off, and replaced the axle seals How much of a PITA job is this to do ?

You will need a press to remove and install the new carrier bearings.

How can you tell that by looking at this picture?

I assumed the same thing as gigihurt. Why would there be a picture of the axle bearings if the OP was talking about his carrier bearings. So maybe PDshooter is referring to his axle bearings and not the carrier bearings. I have confused the names of things before, so its not out of the question.

I also think he means the job "ain't too bad," not that the bearings still look good.

Does it sound like a whine or grinding noise? If it kinda sounds like a whine then your backlash on you gearset might too much due to carrier/pinion bearings going bad. Either way if you replace the differential "carrier bearings" do the pinion bearings and pinion seal as well and axle bearings. This involves setting up a gearset (ring & pinion) which to me is easy but time consuming to get it right. And with used gears could turn out to be hard to do to get them to be quiet. Might want to let a very qualified mechanic listen to it.

I did both axle seals and pinion seal about 10K ago...(Last summer) I noticed back then the rear-end seemed tobe alittle noisy.
The CarQuest store by me has a machine shop. The one guys say he dose alot of Dana 35 carrier bearings. He charges $15 per side + bearings.
In the next few weeks I've got to replace my wife water pump on her 98 Ply mini-van 3.0 V-6 (131K)..........Timming belt, serp, belt. I changed her timming belt 3yrs ago at 87K..........I should have done (PMCS) the water pump then ... Live and learn!
