can a older 4.2l cast iron engine block be welded

So I bought this motor last night for a hundred bucks. Has a motor craft and all the other bells and whistles. Problem is the block has a straight crack between the freeze plugs. Any way to have it repaired?

There are a very few places that are qualified to weld cast iron, and even less that are any good at it. Time for a new block.:(

There are legitimate ways to weld and repair blocks but from the looks of that one Im not sure if you should attempt it. Since it goes from one plug to the other you not only have a crack to worry about but it will also need to be able to seal at both plugs. It looks like someone let that one freeze up and crack, another thing to worry about is if there is another crack somewhere that cannot be seen right now, or if another area has been weakened and might crack later.

I would not want to invest the money to have that one fixed, then invest all the money and time to rebuild that block/engine only to find that the repair failed shortly after the rebuild.

The time now is 08:30 PM.
