Broke the Jeeps cherry

Took my WJ for it's first run at the track. I thought the times were going to be better but they were still pretty impressive, for a 4.0 anyways. I definately need new tires, I had a hard time hooking up, and when I get new tires and some new gears(4.10s) my ET will definately be lower. She trapped at 101.35 with an ET of 13.77, this was the best of three runs all of which had a slight tail wind, but a very high humidity since I live in FL. Once I get the tires and gears in there I think I'll be in the low 13s and when I finally finish my stroker build, I should be able to get down into the 12s! To get these times I ran her on a 100 shot of the N2O and removed all the seats, excpt mine of coarse, some of the interior including door panels, amp, spare tire etc.. And for the exterior, I have removed the skids and got some weight reduction with the lighter head and exhaust components. This is my DD so all the interior stuff went back in once I got her home. This was the first time I ever ran anything like the jeep at the track and so I thought I would come share.

What other mods have you done other than the nitrous, also, is it a wet nitrous or dry? If you haven't already, a nice intake and TB bore and spacer along with a free flowing exhaust, headers, hi flow cat if neccecary, and a decent muffler with something at leasat 2.5" you should be able to trim a good 0.3 off that time. But a 13.77 is a very nice time for something like that.

yeh check my signature I've done all of what you recomended plus a performance ported cylinder head, hydraulic cam and lifters, performance valve sprins, double roller timing chain, ignition, swapped in dual eletric fans, basically everything you can do to a 4.0 except roller rockers or a blower and of coarse I haven't stroked her. YET
Oh and the N20 is a NX wet dual bottle setup with a NX pressure controller and purge kit. I think once I have the gears in I am probably going to get a N2O timer to help control the wheel spin before I continue with the stroker build. I don't want to get all that torque in her withouth a way to put it on the ground.

i think someday i wouldn't mind building an MJ for the track... a bit smaller and lighter... it's cool that you race your WJ though... nice time.

Yes people definately race cherokees, grands, CJs and the like they make for excellant sleepers. This was a regular quater-mile track I was going up against a modded Z28. He didn't think I was going to even come close to keeping up and was amazed with the trap speed. With that trap once I can get her to hook up better at the line, I should be able to do sub 2.0s in the 60ft time.

very nice im so glad im not the only one your times are pretty similar to the ones i ran a Gainsville...only thing is my shot was bigger

The track I ran her at was down in Bradenton; a short drive from here in Tampa. I just got some new/better tires in and I just ordered an LSD to go out back. Once I get those installed I am going back down there. It probably won't be for a few more weeks though. There is also atrack over in St Pete, but I think it's only got an eigth-mile strip.
I should be able to get the dub to hook alot better off the line with the new rubber and LSD which, I think will get me some better trap and ET numbers. With the trouble I was having getting the tires to stick I think I should be able to drop the ET by at least a tenth or two.
How is the track up in Gainsville┐ Do they have regular Test & Tune days or any open bracket racing days┐
By the way what were you running to get that trap┐ very nice

ha cool other people like me i have a 99 jeep gr. cherokee laredo 4x4 now converted to RWD.. I race also im in the 14 sec. category 14.82 to be exact. my mods K&N cold air intake and flowmaster glass pack exhaust single to a 4 inch tip.. and a cold fusion 50 shot wet!! now it's time for my ? for you gear heads which is my best route to a quicker et bumping the nitrous up, cam, headers, hi flow cat, weight reduction, Drag Radials,etc.. i have a limit of $400 to spend what can i get that makes my et alot quicker for that price or less by the way its the 4.7 litre V-8!!

yes they do have test/tune days...

the trap is a result of lack of traction+generous shot
im thinking with some better/wider tires i may be able drop the E.T. a couple tenths with about the same trap speed possibly a tenth lower

BTW...if you do get those gears ...say goodbye to having any traction whatsoever in atleast 1st and 2nd...

traction issues in a cherokee are almost enough to make me want to add weight to the rear just to hook

well i would say...larger injectors, more powerfull fuel pump, get rid of the cat(it is pretty restrictive) you could also get a new gear setup.....because if you have a 5-speed you will notice a HUGE difference...especially in third gear....and a larger nitrous jet is about 10 bucks, so thats no big deal....but definetly upgrade your fuel system and find someway to retard your ignition timing(because if the 4.7 is anything like a 4.0 then that might be a problem to change timing)

if you want more specific details on a good setup just ask....
