bought used axle, what now?

I just purchased a used D35 (I know...why polish a turd) for my TJ. It has 10k on it and has 4.56 r&p. Once I mount it I plan on changing fluid/gasket...what else should I replace or look for before I attempt to drive it? Should I go through the added expense of having a professional examine the carrier and r&p to ensure that it is set up properly?

Thank you,
Blake

1. look for spare axles shafts.

2. pull the diff cover and look for any teeth missing and/or chewed up.

3. replaced cover and fill with you fluids.

4. go wheeling.

you showed also note any burnt smells. this may be an indication of a problem

Don't put it past me...I am known to do stuff like that! No, it doesn't for now...but I've got the new R&P and I will have it done within 3 months or so...I may even remove front ds just for added security.

Thanks, notquitemusashi.
