Which is better 4cylinder vs 6 cylinder
 
Like the subject says what do think is better a 4 cylinder wrangler or a 6 cylinder my dad says to get a 4 since its better gas mileage but I don't think it will be able to go up Rocky Mountain like a 6 cylinder would. What do you think?

Ah, the inlines. These are my favorite options. I prefer the 4 because of gas mileage but I started with the 6 and found it to be easy to work on. The 4 puts out the same amount of power as the 6 if not a little more. I always found this part to be confusing because it's doing the same amount of work less 2 cylinders. THEN when fuel injection and other options were added, the figures began to look more appropriate for the designs. The reliability is there either way but the 6 has far more power at lower RPMs. If you climb mountains I would suggest a stroked and injected 6. There's just something about having 280ft-lbs of torque ready at any moment to climb things where 2WD vehicles can't climb.

For light offroad I would suggest the fuel injected 4. If you only do freeway driving and you managed to find a small super light car body like a Hornet, Concord or Eagle then it starts to become a fun circus just because these are a little more aerodynamic than a brick. If you can find a DJ-5 I would go the inline 4 Audi route. A balance needs to be struck between the power you have and the what you intend to use or you're just going to have a heavy and awkward junk heap.

I have yet to see a 4 get as good mileage as a 6. It is simply too small and has to work too hard to push that breadbox through the air at highway speeds. Add the inevitable lift kit and larger tires, and the four falls further behind. While there were some issues with the some motors due to the stepper carbs, the 4.2 is pretty much universally seen as one of the best engines to come down the pike.
My preference would be the 6, hands down.

MPG difference between the 4 and 6 is negligible.

The only good reason to choose the 4 cyl is to save money with the purchase price.

You purposely buy a 4 banger to swap in a V8.
I have to agree the 4 banger gets WORSE mileage than the I6/V6.
I bought a 4cyl once and resold it within a week after wheeling a buddies identical jeep but with an I6.

We have the in-line 6 4 L in two jeeps and 88XJ with 150,000 miles on the stock motor which still passes smog. Lifted and with big tires maybe gets 14 to15 miles to the gallon. Now the stock 94 ZJ grand Cherokee with the newer 4 L six-cylinder. It is an awesome running car also with over 150,000 miles on the stock motor with a rebuilt transmission as in the other jeep a rebuilt transmission it will get almost 19 miles per gallon on the highway. When test driving cars one day including the new Odyssey minivan and also a Honda pilot I swear this 94 ZJ ran smoother and quieter than any of the new cars I drove that day. Although it is not perfect at this moment even though it runs perfect like a top and shows no error codes I am still trying to get it to pass smog because of high nox. I have another thread on that subject in engines. go four liter r six-cylinder in-line what an awesome motor I've heard that they can go to 300,000 miles, I am halfway there with mine

To be clear don't get the V-6 that came out in 2007 it was supposedly underpowered and not nearly as good as the previous straight six. Now in 2012 the jeep came out with the new penta star, that is being used in the 2013 Dodge ram trucks it is an awesome motor with 285 hp. I am waiting for Dodge or Chrystler to use the new 3 L diesel in the wrangler I see that first it will appear in the2014 grand Cherokee and then in the Dodge 1500 ram trucks and then I bet you we are going to see a diesel 3 L in the wrangler, That will be awesome

Just to throw it out there, I happen to know my friend and fellow member, WeezyBlue, used to own a 2006 TJ with the 4 cylinder with STOCK 3.73 GEARS and achieved upwards of 20mpg. This was also with the 6spd manual, a total lift of around 4.5" and 33" Federals mud terrains. He now has a 2005 Rubicon on 32s with the 6spd and gets around 15-16mpg. I also have a 2004 Rubicon on 33s with the 5spd and usually get around 16-17mpg. A lot of it depends how you drive, your gearing and transmission. On a side note, one of our wheelin buddies owns a 1995 cherokee on 35s, lifted about 6-8"(not entirely sure) with the 4.0 automatic, 4.56 gears. He's somehow magically getting over 20mpg sometimes even 25mpg! Trust me, the math is right. We've tried it several times. Just another testimony, that's all.

I may stand corrected....
I have no experience with the 4's Chrysler is installing in the modern Jeeps. It may be an improvement over the previous 134's and 150's offered.

The AMC/Jeep inline six, both the older 258ci and the newer 4.0L (about 244ci) were some of the best Jeep engines ever built. The newer 4.0L has the advantage of fuel injection and an excellent electronic ignition system but the older 258 was very reliable as well. I've seen both examples routinely go over 200K miles and some make it 300K! As other have said, the gas mileage is about the same between the 4 & 6 cylinder, with the difference being that the 6 has far more torque. The bottom line is the 6 is far more "drivable", burns about the same amount of gas (maybe less sometimes), doesn't work as hard and generally lasts a long time. The 4 cylinder is an OK engine in some applications (mail jeeps, rental vehicles in coastal towns, etc.) but probably shouldn't be used in a 4WD vehicle with the aerodynamics of a brick that is driven in the real world. You just can't beat that inline 6 for reliability and torque.
