AX15 tranny swap - NV3550 vs NV4500??

Hi all. Just curious whether anybody has any input...

I have a 98 TJ with an AX15 transmission. The synchronizers are going bad, so I'll be replacing the tranny sometime soon. I was told that both the NV3550 and NV4500 are direct bolt ups. Is that true? Is one better than the other? I was told they were, in fact, both heavier duty trannys. Is that also true?? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have looked at both. I went with the NV3550. It is rated slightly stronger than the AX-15. The bellhousings are the same. With the NV4550, its a much larger and heavier duty trans, you will probably need to cut sheet metal in the tranny tunnel.

^What he said. I looked at both but the NV4500 is a big heavy trans, I went with the NV3550 just to keep the weight down. It all depends on how much abuse you are going to give it though, if you're into hardcore crawling get the 4500.

Thanks for the input! Based on the wheeling I do, I think the 3550 is what I need. Now to find one!
