ax-5 question

the ax-5 in my 93 wrangler went out. it broke a clip which went through a set of gears and toasted them. the gears that were damaged are the gear on the input shaft and the one directly below that, which from the diagram i have seen looks to be second gear. my question is this. is it possible to take second gear out and just drive with no second gear. the jeep still drives just makes a god awful grinding noise because of the damaged gears. i really don't have the money right now to rebuild the transmission and buy a new set of gears. for as crappy a transmission as these are they sure do cost a lot to repair or replace.
