ATK V.S. Jasper thoughts

I'm trying to decide
the ATK reman motor or the Jasper reman for my 88 YJ.
I do want the 258 4.2 engine in my Jeep. No im not going to take a 4.0 motor from some jeep from some junk yard.
I jus want to see what everyone thinks about these 2 engines.

P.s what exactly is a longblock and what comes on it?

Long block is most everything for a turn key install. You may have to use your oil pan and/or waterpump. Where short blocks are the lower rotating assembly.

It comes down to the parts used during rebuild(ie rings, bearings). So it would come down to me which manufacture would provide warrenty responses faster and easier.

Be careful with Jasper. I had lots of problems with them. To make a long story short, I had fullsize 94 bronco with an auto trans and the 5.0L motor. I had trans problems and had a reman jasper installed at a reputable garage. They gave me a 3yr 75,000 mile nationwide warranty. About a year and a half the trans crapped out. Back to the garage. They replaced the trans again instead of repairing the faulty one. I was very happy. I decided to have the engine done also with a jasper unit. This is where everything went south fast. 2 month after engine install trans problems again plus now engine problems too. (Shifting issues/ leaking fluid and engine lacking power). They replaced trans again but know the jasper rep thinks I do not know how to drive. Any way after about six additional trips to fix my bronco they could not figure out what my problems were. So I wasted a lot of money fought with them to get it right with no results. I wound up trading it in for a nissan titan which I sold for my rubicon and I am finally happy. Sorry this turned out to be a long story but I would never go through Jasper again. Other people may have had better luck with them but I do not know. Good luck with your decision.

The previous post kinda struck a cord. I have installed a number of Jasper engines and transmissions over the years. Stangely, I have heard of a number of issues with their transmissions, but only one issue with their engines. I don't think I would hesitate to get another engine from them, but the transmission experience would lead me to look elsewhere. Strange but true.

Good luck and bad luck will follow any shop. Make sure the warrantee and basic parts are there first then buy.

i'd recommend stimulating your local economy. when I had my 4.2 rebuilt, i got a better warranty and price from a local machine shop. this also allowed me to do things like a 3-way valve job, mild performance cam, etc. that way you KNOW what internals were used. hell, i even got to pick my engine colors.
