Another option but head gasket?

Okay, I have a 2000 wj, 4.0 97xxx miles. it runs great, untill, today. i pulled her in the garage for a front brake swap. finished up. and as i was pulling out it was smoking so bad i couldn't see out of my mirrors. shut it off. very sweet smelling smoke. im guessing antifreeze.

could this be anything else??

2000 and 2001 they used a new casting. The casting number was 0331. They were a little thin in the skin and cracked between 3 and 4 leaking coolant into the oil.

Not sure. From my reading usually it leaks coolant on top of the head and into the oil but that doesn't mean the crack couldn't make it behind the valve and leak into the intake or exhaust.Something to look at.But you have something bad wrong.Sweet smelling steam out the tail pipe can only mean one thing.Your vaporizing antifreeze either in the combustion chamber or the exhaust port. The head pretty much has to come off to find the problem.I don't think there is a coolant passage in the intake like some of the older Carbed engines....but don't hold me to that.....

He didn't say what color the smoke was. There is only three things that will produce smoke out the exhaust.
Fuel, oil, and coolant. The only one that smells sweet is coolant.

It's time to pull the head.

Id wait a day or two to see if it occurs again. Maybe it was a freak occurrence. It might still be a cracked head and maybe some carbon or engine crap plugged the crack for a while? If it happens again, here's your chance to build a stroker!
