Another D35?

Why is the D35 weak? The axle diameter to small, spline count, the R&P chunking? From what I have been reading the axles break. I know they make the D35 Super kit and still its a crap shoot if it will break or not. Why can't they make bigger axles or is the tubes and housing/pumkin just to weak? CJ's had this problen with the AMC20, but finally the aftermarket has fixes for them. Before it was throw a Ford 9" in them.

I guess what it boils down to, what would it take to make these axles work with 33 or 35's?

it's pretty much a combination of everything you said. the axle diameter is too small, the spline count is too low, and the r&p are weak. the shafts are usually the first to go, but beefing them up will just move the breakage along down the line to the r&p, the spider gears, or the carrier. that being said, many people have had success running 33's on it if it is left open, and even 35's if you're light on the skinny pedal. once it's locked it's pretty much a ticking time bomb though. a guy in our club blew his shafts on 31's locked, and another guy in our club just blew up his carrier with 35's b/c he had upgraded shafts. i'd say put a ford 8.8 in and call it a day. that's what i did, and it should be able to hold up to whatever i throw at it as long as i stay under 37's, plus that swap can be done for around the same price as a super 35 kit.

here's some pics of breakage...

shafts:

r&p:

carrier:

spiders:

housing:

plus you get the added disadvantage of c-clips and drum brakes which means, that if you snap a shaft, your whole wheel is going to come off, and you have to find a creative way to hold it on on your ride home.

Sooooo, now I am convinced. Thought it was a lot of hype. Bummer is, when I got the Jeep it has a ARB in it already. Very nice carnage pictures. Guess I'm going to the JY instead of ARB'ing the front.

That axle is just SMALL compared to a Toy axle. To bad the Toy axle is a 6 lug.

glad i could help in your decision. i replaced my d35 with an 8.8 before any of the scenarios pictured could happen to me and every time i look at those pics, i remember why.

Pics and video here:

Spline count has NOTHING to do with how stong (or weak) the D35 is.

Just curious, were any of these the Super 35?
