alternator upgrade question

My alternator crapped out on me, right after i just got my axle in I see everyone does the dodge ram, durango, or zj alternator swap. My question is can you use the 7 groove pulley they come with and not switch the pulleys? and leave the last groove free or would you wear threw belts faster???
