98 XJ won't turn off

I just bought my first XJ last weekend. I'm currently going through the motions of replacing fluids, filters, and parts. Today when I got home I couldn't turn the jeep off. The key could be in the off position or not in the ignition at all and it would keep running. I turned the key back and forth from the off to on position and finally pulled the wire to the coil which did the job with a little shock. I first thought it was the ignition switch so I replaced it but as soon as i started it there I was again unable to turn off the jeep. I read on another thread that the solenoid on the starter went bad and allowed energy to keep flowing while the key was off so I picked up a new starter earlier but a storm rolled through shutting down that project until tomorrow. If that doesn't fix the problem are there any other suggestions out there? I've never had a problem like this before!

Well I replaced the ignition switch and starter because of other posts that I have seen. It ended up being the alternator keeping the engine running when the key was off or out of the ignition.
