89 Wrangler options

Hi I am a new member and I have an 89 Wrangler I bought for my daughter to fix up. Its her first vehicle and I got it with a badly blown motor. It has a 4.2 5 speed. 90% of the Jeep is mechanically new.
The mistake I made was being nice to the auto tech school, I bought a 4.2 they had recently rebuilt. They said they would warranty it for 6 months but I waited a year before installing it. It has a real bad case of blowby and a rattle from the #1 piston.
So I am at my standpoint. The motor needs to come back out. Should I just rebuild this thing or change it to a 4.0 FI motor? I really dont want it to be a big project. We had considered selling the Jeep to get her something with an auto trans but who knows.
What do you guys think? Rebuild, convert or sell? Its a real clean Jeep.
