79D60r front,5.13,detroit,gears wont mesh

i took out the factory 4.10's, bought a detroit for 4.56-7.17, mounted the 5.13 ring gear and installed the new pinion gear. iv tried everything with the shims but its off by enuf that the carrier bearing on the ring gear side wont even completely sit flush in the case. the ring gear for all the 5.13 choices as far as brand were referred to as "thick" but i saw no other choices. i dont know if that could be the problem or not. iv already done the same gearing and detroit on a 14bolt rear with "thick" 5.13 gear for the same reason and had no problem. any ideas on things to check would be appreciated....mike

i would say you eather got the wrong carreir brake for the detroit or you got thin gears, not thick. i would double check the part numbers with who you got it from. the other thing i will say is maybe they gave you a detriot for a dana 61 front.

the dana 61 use's a further off set pinion head to acomadate the thicker gers for numerically lower gear ratio's like 3.31's and 3.07's. this will push the pinion close to .450 to .500 of an inch off a dana 60 pinion ceneter point.

thanks JASON M. for the ideas.

after talking to randys r&p and complete offroad i figured out what was going on. the first problem was my consistently BAD luck. next thing was, the detroit i had would have been fine for any gear set from 4.56-7.17 as long as they were the standard thickness. this next part is why i dont play the lottery,, the only version of REVERSE rotation gears(for dana 60r) they make in 5.13 is thick. so the only option to solve the problem is to run the detroit they sell for 4.10 and numerically lower even though 5.13 is numerically higher. ........theyre hauling me off to the funny farm 2morrow so if anyone needs some good used parts let me know.
