79 cj won't run past 20 min

79 cj7 v8 will start fine and run for 20 min then the coil gets hot and it shuts down. Thought it was the gas line. changed gas line and put gas line in jerry can in back seat and it ran for 20 min's then shuts off. I am at the end of my rope. Not sure if problem is with resister wire going to coil of fuel problem. when it shutters off it feels like gas problem. but after waiting an hour or so it starts right up. Anyone else have this problem. Where should I look next? Any help would be greately appreciated.
