4cyl sucks

ive got a 84 jeep cj7 with the 2.5 4 banger and a 5spd. i have 33's on it and it just doesn't have enough balls to pull em. what engine will bolt right to the same tranny with the least amount of mods. and what would be the cheapest route to go, i am on a budget. thanks

You could do an engine swap, but have you considered gears. My CrazyTJ has a 4 banger with 37s. All you need is the right gearing and you'll have more torque then you can imagine. I'd say, if your 4 banger works good now, then regear. If the motor is shot, then I'd say go for a V8 or something.

Hey I have 33s and a 2.5 with stock gears, and it drives fine........I didn't buy a jeep to race anyone, although I will get some gears eventually, but other things seem to be more important......like a winch and lockers and well.....the list goes on and on

4.56 as a minimum. Me personally, I would go with 4.88's.

I put 4.88's in my 98 tj and you can cruise at about 75 on a FLAT highway. I drove it from cocoa beach FL to Colorado Springs with GW 33 MTR's with the 4.88's and it wasnt bad at all. Had fun drafting the semis to. Now that Im here in CO though the Mt's are killing me so I'm doing a 4.8L vortec swap. But if your not in a very high Mt area the 4.88 work awsome and can turn 33, 35 with no problem.

As Matt said, I am running 37" MTR's with a 4 banger, and if it wasnt for the 4:88's I probably would have swapped an 8 in there. If you regear, as pretty much everyone is in agreeance, do 4:88's. They are perfect, plus I dont think you can go any lower gear in a front Dana 30 , if thats what you have. HTH
