46RH Transmission Overhaul - '94 ZJ

The 46RH transmission failed in my ’94 ZJ w/ 5.2L V8 and trailer tow package. The torque converter failed. The transmission would make a loud whining sound, when not in park. It would drive until warm, then stop driving.

The failed torque converter filled everything with crud. It was brought to a transmission shop for repair.

They replaced the torque converter. They also used a super master rebuild kit, that includes all gaskets, seals, o-rings, clutches, plates, bands, bushing kit and filter. All the electronics were replaced, the 3-4 accumulator solenoid, the solenoid pack and the temperature solenoid were replaced. The reverse drum was replaced.

The quick disconnect fittings were replaced with the new secure retention type.

The fluid line check valve was removed.

The transmission cooler and auxiliary cooler were forward / reverse pulse flushed.

They did something to the governor.

All the crud was cleaned out, including the valve body.

It now works just fine.

Hey, I have a '96 Ram Van with the 5.2L V8 and 46RE transmission.

I was stuck in snow last night (2WD for the lose), and kept rocking it back and forth in reverse/drive.

Got unstuck this morning, drove home. About ten minutes of driving later, the van was fully warmed up, and I hit a problem -- it wouldn't go past first gear, and seemed to be transferring almost no power to the transmission. It refused to engage gears properly, seeming to slip infinitely. If I'm doing 20 and let off the gas, giving it more gas won't let it accelerate, but rather reduces how quickly it slows down (high slippage, but not open slip). In reverse, there's a harsh grating noise (Sound clip: http://www.axcessmypics.com/photos/p...4b8ecdfe98.wav ).

I noticed your post, saying you needed a new torque converter from your symptoms. Do you think mine went bad too?

Mine is doing the same thing. I found that by getting up to 25-30mph and shifting into neutral, then back into overdrive, it will then shift. So its just like driving a manual without the clutch.

Edit: I wouldn't drive it like that every day though. I was just telling you so you can drive it to a shop, instead of paying to have it towed there. If its not already at a shop.
