42RE Rebuild Step by Step

I am starting to rebuild a 42re to replace the failing one in my 1996 GCL.
I decided to try this instead of paying someone else to do the dirty work.
I purchased a 42re out of a 93 GC for $200.
I plan on posting pics, just need help learning how to do so here.

Buy a factory service man and fallow it step by step and there are special tools needed for checking depth of shafts and clutch packs and tons of diff thicknesses of snap rings for getting all this right. I have done 47rh, 47re, and 48re's and it takes more than just a box set to make a good tranny that will last. Good luck.

You will spend more money doing it yourself once you buy all the tools and the time it takes. You can get the service manual and have at it, but the manual does not show the updates to improve it.

I already have the ATSG manual and have 90% of the tranny disassembled. I have been looking for the spring compressor tool listed in the manual but think I will just make something since I can't find one to buy. Also as far as all the measuring goes, I work in a machine shop so I have access to all types of measuring devices. So hopefully I can get the clutch, shaft depth, and snap ring dimensions correct.
And for the updated improvements I was hoping everyone here could give me a little guidance.
I've already looked at getting the Superior shift kit, since I need a new acumulator spring anyways.
Any other improvement advice is greatly appreciated

Heres what the trans looked like when I first got it, minus the pan so I could see what kind of shape it was in.

The filter had a little trash. The jeep I got it out of was rolled and then driven home. So I knew it was going to be a little rough.

This is the magnet out of it. Little harry. This is why I'm ordering a rebuild kit with steels.

sorry to dig up an old thread. How was the final result? I just did the same thing with a dodge ram 1500 (similar transmission). Everything was great for two months but now having trouble shifting out of second. Seems like the kick down is always engaged. (I've disconnected the cable at the tranny with no difference). I'm thinking I missed something. I didn't open up the 'brain'/valve body at all as everything was shifting well before the tear down, just lots of wear on the friction plates. The valve body still kinda scares me

Soxsix, This isn't an old thread, just started actually. I haven't made it to the rebuild part yet still taking apart.
Any advice or tricks to getting the job done. I already plan on opening up the valve body since I got the tranny second hand. It scares me too, but I know it needs to be done.

I have used and air powered valve spring comp, works like a c clamp. The main thing with trannys is just how tight you can get clutch packs with out burning them up, more clutches = less work per clutch = longer life. the things kits don't get you is all the diff thicknesses of frictions and steels, sometimes thinner clutchest and steels will get you more. some times aftermarket tranny companies will mill out reaction plates to get more room sometimes snap ring thickness there are many ways to do this. Valve bodys are of a diff world, for stock operation leave them alone, but for performance shifts they make new valves or modify the ones that are already there, spring changes block passages open up passages get the wrong one and your screwed. the vale body halfs have to be flat or they can cross leak or a nick on a valve and a valve can stick. I could go on and on going to stop, but guys that due this all the time know what to look for and what will work and what won't.

Find a transmission part store, not auto parts like NAPA, or other common ones. I don't know if you have RPM in your area or not. Replace the bands with heavy duty ones, the forward band is known for breaking. Find out thru the Tran parts store who locally rebuilds hard parts, ie the plantaries, and have yours checked out and rebuilt. Don't worry rebuilt hard parts are very cheap. Leave the valvebody alone unless you plan on putting in a shift kit. Keep everything clean and flush out the cooler lines and cooler. Use transmission assembley lube, red looking vaseline. It is a simple transmission to do and just follow your book. Set pressure using gauges. It will cost you more to do yourself, but if you have the time and want to learn then have fun.

Soxsix are you sure it is going into second or shifting from 1st to 3rd. Check the front band, it could need adj or it broke. Very common problem, that is why I always use the heavy duty bands. A hard shift into second and bye bye band.

^ I would imagine this would cause you to lose stupid amounts of power due to changing the gear ratio's

Sorry for the long delay on the build, waiting on funds and parts.
Here's an ongoing 4.0 to 5.2 build.

IT WILL NOT WORK! The 4.0L and the 5.2L have a different bell housing so it won't even bolt up.

If you don't know what you are talking about please don't give people tech advice. There is no differance in gear ratios between a 42re and a 44re.

How the rebuild coming alone? I've been thinking of rebuilding my tranny and would like to know how it's coming along.
