4 low problem

Hey guys. My brother recently got stationed in Japan and is letting me use his Jeep while hes gone.( I know awesome brother) 2000 wrangler TJ, 2.5 ltr auto trans. When he bought it, it had a 3" body lift and he put on a 2"suspension lift. When he had the Jeep every time he wanted to use his 4 low he would have to take off the center console and jam it in gear. Now 4 HI works perfectly. its 4 low that's the problem. The past few days I've been trying to figure out why 4 low isn't working, every time i have tried 4 low it doesn't stay in gear it pops out and then starts grinding, and I am forced to turn jeep off and put it back in 2hi. (after putting it in neutral, to get it back in 2 HI) I have read some reviews on here about transfer case linkage, and after school today tried adjusting it but no luck, maybe I'm adjusting it wrong? I did manage to get it in 4 low today, but it doesn't click when its in, it moves freely so i had to hold it.(dash says PART TIME) it doesn't stay firm like when I'm putting it in 4 high. I'm pretty much stumped here, that's why I decided to ask you guys! Any thoughts?

Probably shouldn't be posting this but it may be because of the 3" BL if he didn't do a MML... Correct me if I'm wrong you guys.

Thanks guys. I did manage to get it to stay in 4 low ( didn't adjust linkage, couldn't figure it out). Got it in 4 low today, went about 3 feet in drive and reverse, worked perfectly. Decided to drop her down to 1st, about right after letting off the brake, it started making an awful grinding noise, and the PART TIME light on the dash was dimming, and flicking on and off. You think it could be the transfer case that's the problem? The sensor for the PART TIME light is in the transfer case right?
