4.0 Trouble, How bad's the damage?

A friend of mine is selling his old cherokee, but there's some kind of problem with the engine/cooling system.

When the engine runs, it blows water out through the overflow bottle when started up, even with a 0 lb radiator cap. With the regular 16 lb cap there appears to be steam in the exhuast. He thought it might be the head gasket but not to sure. It's a 97 XJ with 138k miles on it.

I was going to buy it for parts, but if I can get the engine going again it's definitely getting sold.

Thanks for the help!

Have you done a compression check?

It would seem to me that a radiator is designed to operate under pressure having a 0psi cap would create an opening to the overflow and pop the top off.

Also check the oil for water or a high oil level. Also for oil in the coolant.

No compression check yet, how/what do you need to do one?

There's no water in the oil or anything either. I'll find out more this weekend.

Probably head gasket about to pop. I drove my 92 like that for 2 years lol. Just change the head gasket. It doesn't sound likes in the motor yet. It will if he keeps running it.
The water in the overflow at 0 psi is normal

Sounds like a head gasket.
Inspect the plugs and do a compression test (or better yet, a cylinder leakdown test).
If it is still running and not making any unusual noises, chances are the lower end is still intact.

Pop the cap and fire it up. If you see bubbles in the coolant its a head gasket blown to a water port
