4.0 engine compatability? Need experts info pleaze!!

My 90 jeep Cherokee 4x4 5 speed is starting to have way to many issues ac body damage ect. So I found a perfect 2000 sport 4x4 auto with locked up motor. Can I take my good motor out of my 90 and put into the 2000? The 2000 comes with everything , can I make this work with no snags. wanting to pick this thing up ASAP. Thanks guys. 6063021101 if anyone knows for shure and wouldnt mind a short phone convo call me thankstodd

XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

2000+ TJ Wrangler and WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

XJ/ZJ blocks and 2000+ TJ/WJ blocks do not interchange without significant modifications. (1997-1999 4.0L TJ Wrangler blocks will interchange in XJ/ZJ and visa-versa).

TJ/WJ 4.0L Engine blocks underwent clean sheet design changes effective in the 1999 WJ Grand and 2000 TJ Wrangler. These blocks are not interchangeable with XJ/ZJ engine blocks. The reason is motor mount bolt holes and belt driven accessory mounting bolt holes are in different locations, or not present at all, TJ/WJ vs. XJ/ZJ.

So if I'm reading this correctly my 90 jeep motor won't go into a 2000 and up correct. Only a 99 and below in xj..correct

It will work but the heads are different. Not insurmountable since you're got both vehicles to work with.

Thanks for the help I guess what I'm getting at is what am I going to run into in this swap what all will I have to change? Also will it be worth the trouble or just go with older engine or fix blown engine in 2000 sport?considering money!

Fixing a locked up motor ain't gonna be cheap. Treat the swap like a long block swap. Use all the stuff from the 2000 like the dizzy/cam sensor, intake and exhaust manifolds, flywheel etc.

So I can remove engine out of 90 xj strip it down to heads intake and block and use ac ps wp fly and sensors exhaust mani from 2000. drop it in and it will start and run correct. No computer or wiring harness problems. Kinda need specific details so I don't end up getting bit on this.

That's the way it should go. My only reservation is the intake and exhaust port sizes. It would be good to go to the parts store and look at the intake/exhaust gaskets from the 2 years laid over each other.

Couldn't I use my intake and exhaust mani out of my 90? If they are different that is. What about dealing with going from obd1 to obdII.

Maybe exhaust but not intake manifold. Need things to stay on the 2000 chassis. No worries about OBD.

So only thing I'll use from 90 is bare long block and bolt everything from 2000 onto long block. Which motor mounts 2000 I'm guessing? Read something about them being different.is 2000 cop ignition Correct? What will I do about that?

Transfer the ignition over. The mounts should be obvious.
