2.5 litre turbo diesel

hey guys i was just curious, earlier today i came across the interesting fact that cherokee's come in turbo diesel in europe. I searched the net to find some more facts, and after some unit conversions i found out that it only has 117 hp and 220 torque, the torque is close to that of my 4.0 I6 but the hp is extremely low. I was wondering if hp works differently for diesel engines, and if the acceleration is better for the turbo diesel than the 4.0 I6 that we use in the U.S.

Torque is what gets the wheels turning, horsepower is what keeps them turning. In other words, torque is that low-end "grunt" that is great right off idle (which is why it's good for low speed operation). Horsepower comes into play in the higher RPMs, as in when you're on the highway and trying to maintain speed. You'll notice that the old 4.2 six-cylinder and the 4-cylinder are very much like what you described--112 hp and about 210 ft-lbs of torque--fine for crawling around trails but not so great for passing people on the interstate. I doubt the acceleration would be as good as a 4.0, diesels are great for pulling stumps, but they don't win drag races .

I know a guy that has that set up in an 84 XJ. It is a dog as far as acceleration goes. But it will pull a trailer full of wood and you don't even know it's back there. Try getting parts for one, though. He doesn't drive it much any more. Hamy.

A few people have put diesels in Jeeps. I’ve always wanted one… just for mileage, if nothing else. Diesel’s low end torque would be great for crawling. A turbo-diesel’s insensitivity to altitude can be wonderful too. I’d want something larger than a 2.5. The B3.9 Cummins would make a believer out of anyone, and there’s at least one person here in NM that’s got one in a Jeep. What I remember of it, his gearing was set up for crawling, but mileage was still impressive.
