1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 Only using Front Wheel drive

:confused:I have a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee. 5.3 v8 which I understand is supposed to be 4x4 all the time. My options are either 4 high or 4 low. That being said my Jeep is currently only using the Front wheel drive and not by choice. I can be driving down the road and it just goes in and out of Wheel Drive whenever it wants. I might come to a stop sign and it will go back in to 4 high but then later I look down and I can feel that I'm only in Front wheel drive. I am getting much better MPG because I'm only using the front however I actually need 4x4. My local mechanic is lost, and no one seems to know. IS there a sensor or wire that may be loose or bad?

What is the power splitting device that decides if this thing is in 4WD or not? The transfercase? As far as I can recall I have NEVER seen FWD as a select option in any model of New Process. I think you need to start with whatever case you have and figure out what's wrong with it before you have NO wheel drive and get left stranded somewhere dangerous.

1. It's a 5.2L V8
2. Your T-Case is most likely a 249

The 249 is a Full-Time 4WD Transfer Case. It operates in 2WD (Rear Wheel) until it senses slipping in the tires and then transfers power to the slipping wheels (Front Wheels) And that's the simplified explanation.

I don't believe it would have the ability to operate in Front Wheel Drive. I can't fathom how that would work -.-

You need to take this thing to a Shop that works on Transmissions, Transfer Cases, and Drivetrain if you really think it's using Front Wheel Drive....Like DaemonForce said, that will most likely turn into No Wheel Drive. Lol. But I doubt it's actually in FWD.
