1990 jeep Wrangler Ax-15 Can i install TJ Transfer case?

I am wondering if i can install a new case or if i must stick to a early case. I can get a 1997 case and put HD guts in it will it work?? the speedo isnt a problem it only a mud truck all i need is the tach.
