1978 J10 with a 343

1 Attachment(s)
I just purchased a 78 J10 Levis edition. decoded the vin and it should be a 401. crawled under the truck and checked casting on the block and found it to say 343. further research on the 343 it was not a production motor offered after 1969 so I could possibly have a 290hp V8 in this vs the 215 hp 410. Is this a good score.

1976 was the last year for the 401 in the Jeeps. How did you come up with a 401 for a 1978?

7th digit in the 78 vin is a z which makes it a 401. But it has a 1968 amc 343 4v engine

343 is a good motor. The 401 is also. Iill bet the 343 is alot easier on fuel.

Not sure about that had to trailer it home. Replacing the battery cables plus and wires to see if it will run. It turns over

Draining the tank in the morning then the fresh gas. It turns over and fires but won't catch yet

Turns over fine just need to get fresh gas backfiring like a champ with the old gas

Well fresh gas and still backfires but not running at a lost. Will run a compression test next weekend

Determined tonight that the timing is way out due to distributor not at the right angle. All the pics I have seen show the vacuum advance pointing towards power steering pump and the one on this truck is straight towards the radiator.

Better check the distributor drive gear while you have it out:eek:
