Who wants to go to Moab? (Late April 2010)

Its always been a goal of mine (and im sure the same goes for most of you guys) to make it out there.

I think it would be amazing for our club to get out there together.

With the gas being cheap this idea of mine is achievable again. I figured around $400 round trip for gas at the current price. I figured about 2800 miles round trip, including a few hundred for traveling once we get there. I would also be tent camping.

Who would be up for it?

It seems like Late April 2010 is the time frame we're looking at.

When I made this club for all of us ...
This has been my dream to go to these places with our club members and
I know this will come true for all of us who can afford to do this.

Going to Moab,Rubicon & Tellico will be some of our future plans for our club. Doing this takes major planning and saving some extra bucks to make this possible. But, No Doubt this will happen & We'll plans these trips as soon as we can. We all look forward in doing this as a club.

I think spring 2010 sounds like a good time to plan it for, anyone else agree?
Hopefully it will be a little cooler (than summer would be) for you guys without A/C.
It will give plenty time for people to save up/request off/prepare their rigs.

That would be cool.

But, I think your estimate of 4-5 days would only be the driving to/from portion. I've driven to a couple of Jeep Jamborees and I can cover 250 miles in about 4 hours (and 1 tank of gas). So, with that as my guide, I could cover 750 miles in about 12 hours - that's enough driving for one day. That puts getting there 1,300+ miles later after two days of full-on "sun-to-sun" driving. The same for the return trip.

I'd want at least 2 days there to explore.

I think a longer trip may be a better choice, perhaps 8-10 days. Is there anything to stop off and see along they way? Maybe drive for most of a day, stop and see something for a day or so. More of a journey of several legs and several destinations.

My , anyway.

I agree, a long term plan will need to be started. There are many logistics involved, time off, reliability issues, funding, accommodations, food, etc.

This can be a serious undertaking to get the planning all down.

It may make more sense to try the whole process out on a shorter trip, maybe something a bit closer overall. Something where you drive for most of a day, wheel a day (or 2!), then most of the day back. That way you cover all the issues in a way where you aren't many miles from home or comfort.

I'm all for a bit of a road trip. I would love to go for 8-10 days and hopefully this far in advance it will be possible for the majority of guys to make it happen with work/whatever. I'm sure there are things along the way that are stop-worthy.

We have also been throwing around the idea, of it and it would be like a 10 or so day trip (probally more) just with the driving camping and everything it would take a bit, but definitely be a hell of a time. but I gotta say with driving that far and everything and with the amount of $ were going to use taking this trip I do think we should hit the Rubicon trail and moab in one big adventure , ill get a camera and put together a DVD at the end of it all .... that really would be the ultimate Adventure, Like No kidding ... I know ill have a front locker installed by then and that's all i really need and im good to go

All I can say is we need a Trailer for our back up plan

If we can get a good amount of funds we can rent a trailer.
Plus, I am sure some of our members owns a trailer.

I would say that isn't a bad idea, but what about the Badlands runs? Surely the drive time is much shorter, but we are all pretty far from home, and we make it back in one piece. Plenty of weekend runs have been had without trouble, and between the spare parts that most of us carry we probably wouldn't have much trouble building a Jeep out on the slickrock.

I've been thinking that in order to ensure that our rigs are reliable that we could maybe meet up for dinner somewhere and do a once over with everyone. I know that most guys are able to diagnose their own rigs but it some may need a little bit of guidance. Ideally this would be done far enough in advance to do any needed repairs/maintenance.

Also we can communicate with each other about what spares people are bringing. Especially onsider most of our rigs will swap the majority of parts. Just so we can save a little weight over that long drive.

Just some ideas...

Yes, I would like do the whole shebang, but adding the Rubicon would almost double the driving distance just to get there and back. I'm not sure 10 days would be enough, you'd have to be on sabbatical or something to take that much time off.

I've been on many a road trip, and they start off "fun", but as the miles wear on it becomes more of a chore, you'll need even more diversionary stops to moderate the strain.

Again, my experience anyway.
