Need some audio help/ direction

I've got the stock system in my 2001 xj.

I want to upgrade the speakers, for better quality, and clarity.

My front left speaker is cut, it no longer works. (Used to.)

I will have to run new wire.

I'd like to upgrade my speakers, front and rear, while retaining my stock head unit. (I don't want anything fancy.)

My budget will be about 200.

Any help, and speaker recommendations would be great.

Thanks!

I have no audio experience, can you add an amp to the stock head unit?

Don't suppose you have the stock Infinity sound system, do you? If so, you already have a (pretty crappy) amp under the back seat.

A good head unit (CD/MP3 capable) is gonna be ~$120 shipped (Maybe a Pioneer P500UB or an Alpine 9872) and a pair of front speakers will be around $75 (Infiinty Reference 5022i or Alpine SPS500c). I'd start there and save some money to do the rears later.

It won't be the best in the world, but it should sound clean and play loud enough for you unless you are an all out bass head. Both decks let you add a sub later if you want as well.

I really don't want a new head unit.

I hate all the ones they make, as they look directly out of a honda, or similar.

Are there any retro looking head units? (That aren't all colors, and lights)

I don't have the infinity unit.

i dont blame you. my friend had an accord (it wasn't riced out just a nice accord) and when he put his sound system in he left the stock radio in. it was for security purposes but it looked very clean with it in.

Yea, I don't want something that detaches, I leave my windows down way too much.

I don't want expensive stuff sitting in there.

I put polk momos in my rear and i think the stock ones sound better so don't buy those. I was told either alpines or Memphis will work. I installed my rears by myself and it was super easy a matter of two wires and two wire caps. I also have a 01 without the infinity.

okay.... with $200 bucks most people would tell you alpine on this forum but i think they are absolute garbage. i would put in some jl audio speakers. they are probly the best big name speakers you can buy. i live in memphis so i hear them alot and they are damn good too but you would probly have to order those online in cali. and fyi after you replace your front speakers you will want to change your back ones too

Ok.

I'll check it out.

All the places around here want at least $40 to install. I don't need someone to put speakers for me, But I'd like someone to run new wire. $40 doesn't get you new wire.

Yea, but bestbuy says.. "40 bucks per pair to install new speakers, and if you need new wire, we'll do the new wire, and then tell you how much it will cost after it is said and done."

I was like, uhh, are you serious?

hahaha
