Installing Subs, where to drill for power cable?
 
1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport

Pretty self explanatory. I already ran the amps cables but I can't figure out where to drill for the power cable for the amp on the firewall. I figured I could drill from the inside out to the outside but worried about going into the fenderwell or somewhere I can't get the wire too.

Where have yall drilled your holes? And did you mount a switch to manually switch off the subs? I do not want them on all the time so I was going to mount a switch to the remote wire to be able to toggle them. Here is a pic of the dash. I mounted a switch bc next to where the factory floglight switch was but it turned out horrible. Just wondering where yall would hide it or install it.

I ran my power cable through the same grommet my speedo cable went though on my 90. On yours you are probably going to have to make a new hole. Looks like up high in the foot well has plenty of room.

You shouldn't need a switch for the subs if you use the remote wire. If they bug you, just turn them off on your radio. Most Pioneers do it by hitting audio until sub is on the display and then pushing down.

I planned on running a switch like my brother did in his S10 because I don't want them on all the time. I would like a fellow member to use PAINT or another program to place a dot where I should drill. Reason being is I don't want to drill a hole that may or may not go into the engine compartment. I don't need to fill a "mess-up" hole with silicone, if I don't have to. That black hose at the bottom, i think, is the drain for the evaporator/condenser behind the dash so it's got to be below that.

i ran mine through a grommet above the gas pedal, its way up in there. look under with a flash light and you will see an oval shaped rubber plug. ill get pics up when i can. i just drilled that out its a PITA to fish the big wire through but worth it. no new holes really in metal and no leaks. as for the switch, i originally did that but then when i re-mounted my amp under the seat, i ran a wire to the deck so the subs come on when the deck comes on and shuts off when the jeep is off. if i dont want the subs on i just turn them down or off through the deck.

next to that bolt shortest distance to battery. just check what on opposite side

I used the same spot aircruiser used.

As for your switch.... I see you have an aftermarket head unit. There should be a remote wire in the harness. This wire is usually blue. Connect this wire to the remote terminal of the amplifier and the amp will turn on and off with the head unit.

This is on the driver's side of the engine bay. Does that help?

If somebody knows why they put this there too I'd be interested in knowing.

Looks like something they used to hold stuff in place while they assembled the body.

I ran my power wire through the grommet below that, though I've got a older style one. It poked out right above the fuse panel.

I got it done awhile ago. It's right be that 90 deg elbow for the drain on the heater core (w/e it is). I accidently went through some of the foam on the inside but didn't hurt anything. Getting the grommet to stay in place was a PITA but overall it was an easy install.

blue/white for the amp switch. Or you will endup like i did and only have the amp on when you are using the radio (blue is power antenna so its off when on aux)

First drill a pilot hole ( no bigger than 1/8 in). It will help avoid drilling a huge hole in the wrong spot and having to fill it. I drilled the hole for the power cable underneath the carpeting above my gas pedal. You can usually see in the engine compartment where the pedal is mounted, and use that as a reference point. If you can't find the hole shine a light from the inside and have someone look for it in the engine compartment. Then drill a bigger hole, with just enough room for a rubber grommet...or a couple layers of duct tape. Not the best option but worked for me. This will prevent the wire casing from tearing. Be sure to run the power down the opposite side of your jeep as the remote and aux cables. The electrical current will interfere with the audio signal. I ran all my cables under the plastic that covers the carpet edge. You can ground it on the bolts holding the seat in place.
