I need tranny help.

whats up all im new to the forum. i have a 1984 XJ 4x4 2dr w/ 2.5L and 5 spd that isnt running as of now.i dont know what is actually wrong until we drop the trans. i just wanted some info from anyone that has done anything tranny wise to there XJ and could give us some tips or any help. ill try to explain what is wrong. ok when the clutch is pushed in everything is fine no tranny noise/vibration, revs fine but when i let the clutch out and go it sounds like somthing is being thrown around inside the trans mission and the XJ doesnt want to go. this has slowly been happening over the passed month. Right now my dad and I are in the process of dropping the tranny, we bought a new clutch kit and are waiting to buy a trans.jack so weve just taken off the drive shaft and exhaust.. this brings me to my second question i need a new cat and muffler. does anyone know where to get a cheap cat conv?and what is the best sounding muffler on a 4cyl?
Im leaning toward flowmaster just because its only $69. if it makes any differance the exhaust will come out on the passenger side before the rear tire. Thanks for any help ahead of time. pce

i had an 85, 4x4, 2dr, 2.5L, 5 speed and i miss that thing like crazy!! Cant help you too much with the tranny problem, sounds like you shattered your clutch plates or throw out bearing maybe? anyways i have a dynoflow muffler on my 4.0 and it sounds great, nice rumble and not really loud at idle. but definitly sounds good when i get on it. anyways, good luck with the tranny. I wish i still had my 85

because it only happens when the clutch is getting engaged, this is what its not

its not the poilet bearing
its not the throw out bearing
its not the pressure plate (fingers wise)
its not the motor

it could be the flywheel surface
the pressure plate surface
the clutch disc
transmission internals (not likey)
transfer case internals (even more unlikely)

update

well we ended up paying $600 to get the clutch kit replaced and the problem still wasnt fixed. there was still grinding in 1st,2nd,3rd, and 5th gear. well tonight when i met my girlfriend for dinner 1st,2nd,and 3rd gear went out i had to ride home in 4th gear. And aslo 2 day we just put on a new cat and a dynomax super turbo muffler, sounded so good. now i need to find out how much i can get a new tranny or gett this one fixed.

are you ready for this one......first on to the soap box

theres no reason to throw parts at a vehicle, i could have guarenteed it wasnt the clutch as soon as i read your first post, but, it was prolly time anyway

now, if you sit down and read about how a tranny works, youll very quickly come to the realization that its one of these 2 things:

1) 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th syncros are shot, unlikely that only 4th is ok

now

2) 4th gear is your 1:1 gear, the power flow in 4th gear goes from the input to the output shaft. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and rev use the counter shaft for the gearing
in a syncromesh tranny, the counter shaft is always spinning, so its not the bearings, or it would do it in 4th as well, im going to guess, with out hearing it and say its a broken counter shaft

got it back. it ran so nice for a day, now its out of comission till i get a new carb. should be here tomorrow. just picked up a pair of rancho +3inch shocks for the front and steering sabilizer for $5 each at a truck salvage place. the jeep feels and drives like brand new. a new carb will top everything off nicely, i think the kit comes w/ a new aircleaner assebly but if it doesnt im looking at rustys air intake. peace
