I just kind of scanned through this...
You guys are saying you did this with a sanding drum attatched to a drill? And just opening it up to 60mm correct?

yes. but has anyone bored the whole thing out to 62mm and made a new butterfly? or will this be overkill on a stock motor?

XJ40h: Yes and Yes or if you can find someone with a metal lathe that is probaly better.
955speedch: ive never seen anyone do that before, i know you can buy them that way. After taking everything apart, i see how easy it would be to make a new butterfly. You can also buy 62mm buterflys from a place called xj arrmor (google it) I think it is overkill on a stock engine, but if you have some bolt on mods (muffler, cold air intake) then it is better than the 60 |

what do you guys think works better with the drill press, flap wheel or sanding drum? also how do you center the Tb under the press, or does it "self center" due to the close size of the sanding wheel compared to the TB

i would say a flap wheel would be faster, but i can do one in under 15 min with the sanding drum, that is factoring the time needed for the throttle body to cool between sandings.

jeeptorino68,
yeah, I found the wheel and actually had to cut out more than everyother-cut 2 leave 1 cut 2 etc. The reason was that the the smaller dia. portion of the TB is 54 ish mm's which computes to aprox 2.2 inches. And since I was using a 3in flap wheel I needed to lose that extra dia. yet still have the sanding power. In short, it was to be able to fit the wheel into the TB. Even then it was tuff. If you have one, you could use a piston ring compressor but youd need a POWERFUL drill press and tighten down the chuck really tight. I tried the drum later and -for me- it was a little harder to get the walls smoother and even with the upper area. Kirt

cool thanks for the info, so you think if i used a flap wehel closer to 2 inch dia. i will have to cut fewer if any out of the wheel? the flap wheel route sounds like it willbe the easiest. im trying to keep things cheap so this sounds like just the ticket.
speaking of which has anyones mileage gone down since boring the TB? or do you guys alway shave ur foot in the gas now haha

If you went with a smaller wheel don't go below 2.5in. The flaps wear-out fast and you need alot of surface area to do the sanding. I couldn't find any smaller than 3 but bigger than 1.5

so, could I turn a throttle body on a lathe to 62 mm if I got a new throttle plate?
