Drag Strip Challenge

So nobody here knows me as I am new to the Jeep game. One of my friends owns a 2001 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L automatic 2WD, and I bet one of my friends that it could destroy him on the 1/4 mile. The car I will be racing is a 2012 Chevrolet Cruze 1.4L turbo, he is mildly modded and while I am not sure what he will have time or money to do before our date set in June, I am anticipating that he will not run anything faster than a high 13 or low 14 (worst case scenario of he dumps every cent he has in it). I cannot divulge what the bet entails, but I do not want to lose. I have several friends who have assured me that I will be able to beat him with just intake, exhaust, and a new gear, but I thought I would get some answers from the experts. I am not looking to do anything crazy but would like to be able to run 14s and 13s if possible (would be more fun if I can not only beat him, but embarrass him). Here is the problem, as it is not my vehicle the person who I am borrowing it from has set these parameters:
1. It must remain automatic
2. Any modifications must be reversible
3. I cannot blow up the motor (if I do I'm sure i can find a junkyard replacement haha)

I would like for any modifications that I do to be tasteful and for her to want to keep them, but if I have to run a small shot of spray through the throttle body I will..... Any input is appreciated as I am not a Jeep person and am doing as much research and learning in the next few months as possible. Thanks in advanced guys!!

best time I ran in a stock 4.0 2wd was 15.80's, you should give up now if your shooting for 13's on the cheap

Not looking too cheap. I've got til June so if I need to start building a motor I will. I plan on stripping the interior to the bare minimum, and I doubt he will actually run 13s as the best recorded time for a cruze that I can find is a 15.3 and thanks for the links adhd lacrosse.

nm I don't know where you got 13's & 14's from but the turbo diesel cruze is no where near that...16.42 with 50hp tune and few other bolt ons

No that was the gasoline cruze and yes I know it sounds a bit crazy haha. The only reason for building the motor was so I could return the jeep in its original condition.

From what I've seen, 16.5's are the average for these cars. I've been around the dragstrip area for a lot of years, and knocking 2 seconds off to even get to mid 14's is going to require a lot of work from him...
At best, you're probably looking at having to beat a low 16 second car

Thanks man. I was going off YouTube for his car and like I said the best i could find was a 15.3. We will be running at Richmond if anyone has run at that strip.

Also we did a little freeway pull and from 20-70ish and he only pulled about 2 cars on me. He was also running with no passengers and a stripped out interior. I was in the Jeep with 2 other people, a full interior, and a trunk full of stuff. I don't think it will take much to make the Jeep faster, just gotta get a couple runs to learn how to launch her.

Have you guys gone to the track for any test n tune?

Also hit the track with a 1/4 or less tank of gas for less weight .... Maybe a lunch box locker too

Transgo shift kit for the 42re. ..

What's your budget? Junkyard turbo??

Oh and pull the front sway before the race - allows the front to raise up higher and less weight

IMO, if the trans is in good working order, a shift kit will help nothing. And even a junkyard turbo is going to be way more involved than I'm thinking this project needs to be?
I would at least do as mentioned above, get to the track ASAP to see what you're working with. Then you know where you stand, and where you may need to be.
