Do-It-Yourself Window Tint

Are there any good DIY window tint kits out there so I can tint my front windows of my ZJ myself? I don't want to have any issues with the purple-tint or bubbling, and was curious to know if anyone has used a DIY kit with good results? Thanks

Tinting is an art. Spend the $60 and have a shop do it.

yeah there are plenty of kits out there... from just buying a roll of tint and the tools at autozone, to getting pre cut tint online that will be pre cut to fit your windows...... but either one will look like crap if you dont know what your doing.

pay to get it done right... and youll probably get a warranty too

I previously bought a pre-cut window tint kit and it's a lot harder than what it looks. It ended up looking like crap so I ripped it off and paid the $280 to have it professionally tinted. Got the back windows tinted 5% limo and the front two at 35%. Had 15% on the front...but got pulled over and ticketed so got 35% as here with a medical exemption it's legal to have 35% on the front.

It's definitely worth it to have it professionally done...unless you know what you're doing! ;)

I just bought a kit for around 20 bucks off of ebay. I had never tinted windows before, took me about 2 hours and looks awesome

P.s. The kit came pre cut, and with like a 3 year warranty

If you don't have much patience have some one who knows do it.

It isn't as easy as it looks. I tinted my two front windows last month. They look good, but there are some very small bubbles and a small crease in one. But overall, I think I did a great job for never doing it before. You have to go slow, use a lot of the tint solution, and have A LOT of patience.

I want to tint my car. Is there any specific good brand of DIY window tinting?

maxacon3000 09-10-2010 12:22 AM

Autozone, Gila brand, cheap, everythings easy except back window, just read directions and your good, and as for any bubbles, in time when the sun is beating down on it they should dissapear. Just look up youtube videos on how to do it.

The trick is to get the glass perfectly clean. Some installers scrape the windows with a razor blade - carefully not to scratch - to squegee off anything on the glass. Any imperfection will show through the tint.

They even use filtered water - a sprayer with a filter attached - and distilled water so that the water does not introduce a speck of dust or anything under the tint.

Two other tricks: do not worry about precutting. Let it run wild and trim back w/ a razor balde.

Use black pinstriping tape around the edges to conceal any 'oops' items.

Good tip man! I don't think i'll ever do tint by myself though. It's just a shop thing for me. Bad tint is embarrassing, and I want to hold someone accountable if it fades.

I had a spare driver's window that I used (The rest of Jeep is limo from PO) and cut it to size out of the car, then applied the tint.
