What is it with people that get all uppity over stuff not built by the owner??? I appreciate people that have the time and skill to invest, but if you don't, the end result is the same. You just don't have the satisfaction of saying you built it.

That logic of "you didn't build it so it sucks" amazes me. So if you see a cool Jeep in a parking lot are you suddenly unimpressed with it if the owner walks up and says either he got it like that or stroked a check?

I'm not picking nits, I'm curious....

Barry

Nice looking Jeep. I want to build a box for the back of mine very similar to yours. The only difference is I want mine to lock. I am not a very trusting person.

I'm probably going to add a lock, actually. I don't daily drive this, or leave it parked in shady spots (in the garage mostly). but the added security would make me feel warm and fuzzy inside :P

So this weekend was really good. I got my amp and sub installed. I used a box that fit perfectly on the floor behind the passenger front seat. Since i don't typically take 4 people in the jeep, it's not really in the way, but can be easily removed if needed. It sounds amazing now

And i finally got a chance to take the jeep out this weekend. We went up to Evans Creek, and the weather held out perfectly.
Poser pic:

It poured on friday, so i was really worried, but it was a great day to finally test out what the vehicle was capable of.

I wanted to start off on some of the easy trails, but we found that the easy trail we had picked out was closed...The trails were rated 1-3...We picked a 3 for the first run. This was the first time i've taken it out, but screw it!

I met up with a guy i met off Pirate4x4, Steve. He had a 71 FJ40 on 33's, a 305/700r4 and a rear locker. He really impressed me where he was able to go.

A decent flex pic

These trails were all restriced to 80" width vehicles. I BARELY made it through the gate (i'm 78" tire-tire), and i found out why they had the restriction

This hill was pretty fun, one could get nearly vertical on it

Hood popped for some extra cooling

Overall it was a great day. Had a heart stopping moment when i heard a LOUD snap...Thought i lost a ujoint, maybe a DS. Hopped out and didn't see anything...My xfer case had popped out of gear.. Thank god.

Here's the trail carnage :

There was a super narrow spot on the trail where I tried to hold to passenger, but had to turn hard driver to avoid a tree. I slipped off a root and right into a root sticking out. :
Steve is a lot narrower, but he also slid into the SAME root, and tore his softtop. ... We ran into a group of Cherokees later in the day, and a guy laughed as he had the EXACT same dent on his cherokee, and lost his window to the same root

So I'm extremely pleased with the jeep...I really need to concentrate on making this bumper and getting the winch on. Also on board air would help out, since airing down really gave me the traction i needed.

nice pics!! i bought a built jeep too, but it is nowhere near done.

also, regarding your steering, sometimes the steering box develops some slop to it. there is an adjustment allen bolt on the top of the steering box that can be tightened. here is a writeup for a tj, but the adjustment is the same for an xj. the only thing you may need to remove is the e-fan. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f12/s...riteup-498155/

i had to do it on my last xj and it made a world of difference.

Was a busy week, but got a few things done this weekend...I really had a tough time deciding between going full OBA, or just get a small compressor that can do just my tires. I realized that OBA would be pretty cool, but i wasn't willing to give up my AC, and the other electric pump/tank setups are 4 times the price of doing just a compressor. Secondly, i won't really want to lug all my air tools with me on the trails. Yes it is convenient to have 1/2" impact, but a socket will do the same a little slower. So i bought this:

Q Industries MV50
[ame]http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BM8RT8[/ame]

It's got lots of mixed reviews, but i figured i could buy 4 for the price of one Viair unit in comparable output. It's worth trying out. I figured I could extend the life of it by not running the piss out of it too, which to me would be a huge factor to why people have problems with them. After filling 2 tires from 12-25psi (only about 2-3 minutes per tire), i gave it a break. It was pretty hot to the touch, but heat is the enemy on these pumps, so a few extra minutes doesn't mean a lot to me.

I also finally got a chance to install my B&M trans temp gauge. I installed the sensor on the return line. The reason i did this was so i could verify the effectivity of my transmission cooler.

Love the Shaun of the Dead pic...very fitting! Nice build man. I don't care how much you put into that build, you've given me some great ideas for the start of mine in the spring (dig the tie down brackets on the back box).

Cheers!

Great looking XJ, I like the trans cooler temp gauge, I am thinking that will be a near future project for mine.
