Visible trim differences are a dead givaway for some. 87- 90 had the 4.0 possible, 91 and on had the 4.0 HO mainly. 97 had a body style change. Thats all I know.

84-86 have either a 2.5 or a 2.8 badge,

87 has a 10 slot grille and a 4.0 badge and no badge for a 2.5

88-90 have a 4.0 badge or no 2.5 badge and the new 8 slot grille

91-93 have a 4.0 HO badge, and slightly different Cherokee badges

94 has a 3rd brakelight and a non-airbag wheel

95-96 have a 3rd light and an airbag wheel

97 black plastic (often faded now) fender flares

98-01 body colored flares

Thats all I notice...

Sadly, all of these have happened to me at one point.
