I've got both a TJ and XJ. I love my XJ as a DD because it is comfy, quiet, rides great down the highway and does alright on gas (compared to my TJ). Some of the parts are interchangeable. My XJ is a 98 with ABS, so it has the d35 in the rear, but 8.25 axles are easy to come by. It is worth it as a DD

Not to thread hijack, but you get 22-23 mpg with 33's and 3.55 gears on the highway? I can barley get 17 mpg on the highway with 31's and 3.55's

Yes. Thats averaged after a few tanks of gas. We got lucky and were able to maintain fairy consistent speeds for a majority of the drive both ways. It drops with more traffic on the highway. (And if Im not paying attn to my speed). Thats also after the injector upgrade.

^ Hmm injector swap may be in my future then, also how does your XJ do with the 33's and 3.55's? I need new tires soon and was thinking of going up to 33's.

I'm 6'3" and about 220 and have no problems entering or exiting my xj. Truth is I would rather drive it than my DD but the jeep does about 18-19mpg and my DD does 31-34 mpg so the more i save the more i have for my jeep and other projects. (injector upgrade coming soon!!)

Not all Cherokees are auto. Taller guys prefer 2-door models as the longer doors give you more leg room to get in and out. Mileage can vary from ~20 stock to ~15 with 31s and so on. Reliability is a toss-up although 96-99 seem to be the most reliable with 96 and 99 being the best years.

My build thread has pics again. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f177/kevin108s-2000-xj-build-867428/

^what he said.

my 99 XJ has the same AX-15 97-99 TJ's have, a DD, and gets 19 mpg consistently. Sometimes I wish I went with the AW4 again because traffic sucks when you're riding the clutch, but otherwise, after the regular maintenance & upkeep, great bang for the buck vehicle.

MPG is going to vary widely due to driving conditions, driver, care of the vehicle, ect.

I drive with a lead foot and I'm getting in the 18 combined mpg or so, but I also maintain speed trying not to change gears often. Cylinder head is new, I seafoam regularly, spark plugs, wires, filters, ect were changed with the new head. I don't run my a/c, I don't carry around tons of tools and such daily, and I make sure my tires are aired up on the road. Still need to upgrade my injectors, but for running 32s I'm pretty damn happy with the gas mileage I'm getting. Still a hell of a lot better than my v6 Dakota with 235s on it.
