XJ Rear Bumper Options

Hello all,

I have had my XJ for about a month now. When i purchased it, it already had a homebrew front bumper with two d ring mounts but nothing fancy. It is made from fairly thick steel so i will keep it for the time being. I am wanting a nice rear bumper. I do not need one with any sort of mounts built in as my spare tire and all tools will be inside or on my roof rack. All i want is a 2" receiver and 2 d ring mounts. Anyone have any suggestions for a decent rear bumper that is affordable(rear under $450)?

You don't 'think' you want your tire on the outside until you start to build it up and wish your 33" spare wasn't taking up all your hatch space.

It's completely worth it to consider the tire swing option for the extra few hundred dollars if you go for a 'nice' rear bumper.

Or get a plain Jane bumper with good lines. If you plan on having D-rings or a receiver, ensure the bumper ties into the frame rails and doesn't just use the factory bumper bracket bolts. Those 8 bolts will not be adequate for extractions or towing. You need nutserts or a bumper designed to be bolted thru the unibody frame rail.

Warrior Products bumpers have a really clean "enhanced stock" look, but I'm not sure how well they tie into the frame, and they don't build the rear with a receiver (though they do notch it to allow nice, tight clearance for a receiver under it). I'm personally eyeing-up a Warrior front bumper and a JCR rear (for the class III hitch built-in); JCR's rear is also a pretty clean and "enhance stock" look.

Thanks all for the replies. Ill check those out.

Rug, i didnt mean the tire will go inside. Mainly tools will go in there. Hi-lift and tire and the larger items will go in a roofrack that ill be building.

I might look into AJ's rear bumper and their Super Rockrails. Also getting a 5% discount from them is nice! Guess military has its perks occasionally.

I loath tires on the roof of XJ's. It's a personal opinion shared by some.

On the trails I run, we rub our roofs on low hanging branches and slip under trees. Plus when going off camber I don't want 100+ lbs at the highest point of my vehicle.

For me it's either inside or on the back. I also home brew most of my stuff, so I can't stomach the cost of an aftermarket bumper.

Good luck w. purchase when you decide.

Only caulk bags mount tires and hijacks on their roof.

That's a hater statement.

I got the smittybilt xrc both front and rear bumpers. Love them. The rear has space for 2 d rings and replaces the factory hitch. I believe there is a compatible swing out tire carrier that is made for it, too, if you were to choose that option in the future.
