I'm curious to see what people have done to customize their XJ's interior. Things like toggle switches, gauges, etc. I know there is always someone who has painted their cluster bezel or covered it with carbon fiber or wood grain stickers, but I want to see functional things. Where do you put all your stuff? And a couple solid ideas about at least one cup holder would be cool. HAHA!
Installed my Sirius under my center console... not a single wire showing i love it. This head unit is nice too - its the only one I could find that fits the 1.5 din and it looks stock which is what I was shooting for.

I also did the whole blue LED interior light conversion... i like that too...
My next project will be one of those hidden subwoofers posted about on here
it's a Pioneer DEH-P77DH, I've had it for a few years now so there might be a newer model out there. It was the only 1.5 din I could find at the time so there might be other 1.5 dins out there now too. Good luck, feel free to steal the idea thats why I posted it. I just drilled a hole into the inside of the console and the wires just run right under and around to the back of the head unit. Have fun.
that link to the one on crutchfield says they're discontinued... like I said it's a pretty old head unit. they're still around other places for sale though. what do you mean by slow on the jensen one? to load up a dvd or something?
I went to the junkyard and pulled an amp and a couple inches of the wiring harness out of a ZJ with the infinity system. I DID have to run 8 sets of wires under the carpet around the tranny tunnel. (4 from headunit, and 4 to the wiring the headunit *normally* goes into) I took my time and wired everything well and I've got a pretty kick butt system. I do have a small sub in the back but I think the amp still made a world of difference.
...it was $30 at my junkyard for the amp and I chose a limited ZJ that was in mint shape (mustve been C4C) and low and behold the amp looked brand new.... make sure the battery is discoed first though because if you slice through that harness with current going through it you could cause some problems or short out the amp or start a fire who knows. The power wires were both violet on the later ZJs (theres two violet in one connector and one violet in the other, the two next to each other are the powers, the one alone is for a speaker, confusing huh?) so if you cant disco battery cut those first and tape them off and cut the rest.
Also, you may want a wiring diagram, PM me and I've got a PDF
Not to sound mean or anything, dont get me wrong I love helping out fellow Jeepers, but college process has me tied down right now, I don't have enough time to ship it out to you Plus I dont know if I'll get that kind of deal again, I did buy a full set of leather seats and some more misc stuff so he prob gave me a discount....
Has no one wired an AUX jack to the stock head unit? Was looking into figuring that out in the near future.
As far as interior goes, not much has changed in my Jeep. No longer have the switches that turn on lights when doors are open from when I removed my doors. I also installed this a while back:
Here are the problems with that. Practically 80% of the XJs out there are not limiteds and thus do no have the infinity sound package. As such they do not have a power amp and the speakers are connected directly to the headunit. You cannot splice into those wires because your iPod doesnt have the juice to pump four speakers, let alone earbuds. Your iPod gives out a pretty good "Line" voltage so it would work great with an amp setup if you had to. The more I think about it, the factory Infinity amp actually doesnt take line inputs it takes speaker level inputs so if you hooked your ipod up it would work but wouldnt get too loud. Best solution while retaining a factory headunit is to get the FM Modulators, and no I dont mean the cheapo ones you put AA batteries in and you tune them. No, Scosche I think makes a kit where you plug it inline with your antenna cable. Best spot is behind/underneath the glovebox area where theres a motorola jack coupler and you have a switch. When you flip the switch the modulator turns on and theres an aux jack that transmits directly onto a preset FM frequency with an extremely clear signal since its hardwired. Works great in any car and beats the heck out of tape decks and el cheapo FM thingys.
and yes, I know I revived this thread, but I've got some sweet interior pics to post soon because I've done quite a few updates, and I want to get this thread rolling again
That amp doesn't look right there. Maybe you should just go ahead and send it my way, so I can mount it and show you where it would look better
lol sucker, I thought the same thing since koolaid was talking about amps. Koolaid I still have you in mind but I'm still debating on the partout. I have to figure out if the junkyard will pick it up after I sell everything or just to sell the whole thing to to someone. Right now it has no alternator, other than that it's still intact. I can prob get more with a partout but I don't want to remove stuff to ship to people. Plus I want the rims off it but without rims, how the hell am I going get it to the junkyard?
I dont know about in SC, but here in Jersey the JY will come pick the shell up from you. They came and picked up my old 92 from me and gave me $100 for it. it had no suspension and the axles were only connected by the brake lines...they didn't care..they came, loaded it on the flatbed, gave me the money and went on their merry way
i have the stock rims and some pretty bald tires that you can have to get it to the JY if you want them. What rims are on there now that you would want to keep and sell?
i just re painted all my interior panels when the jeep got a fresh coat of desert tan:cheers2:...also if ur xj is a 5 speed get an old MR2 shift knob, its comfortable, it screws right on, and its like a poor mans pistol grip :duhrock:
Alright guys, I dont know how much i've put up in this thread before so I think I'll cover them all right now.
theres alot in this picture. You can see I have my WJ leather seats, oh so comfortable. Woodgrain dash panel from a limited makes for a classy appearence. I also bought factory Infinity tweeters which sound great even when I pump dave matthews band on the highway windows open. Garmin Nuvi265wt with bluetooth phone and traffic hardwired into ignition. Wire is hidden and wired behind the dash. Same goes for the radar detector. Next to gauges in the blank panel (hard to see) is a switch for my auto headlights. Sony Xplod headunit with an ipod direct hookup in the glove box. Temp gauge next to transcase shifter. Custom switch panel in place of ashtray with high idle switch and switch for roof lights and a conventional aux in in the front for when I want to control ipod by hand and not through headunit. Up on the roof you can see I installed an overhead console, fully functional, and I also custom-fitted a homelink module into the headliner, love it.
Heres the ipod hookup in the glovebox:
and a closer look at the infinity tweeters:
My rear ZJ limited seats, very comfortable and well worth the time drilling and fabbing. The 60/40 split bench folds well too!
And here are my front WJ leather seats. These are my favorite seats and I opted for them over limited ZJ front seats because the side bolsters are great and gives my back plenty of support:
and in the trunk I added an aux power outlet and also custom built a trunk box to go around my sub box and secure it as well as shield the amp and wiring from view. It is very clean and everything is wire loomed. Maglight mount too. Also, courtesy lights in the box are spliced to the dome lights.
And this is a cool spot I found to mount another aux power outlet under the rear drivers side seat, there was a perfect cutout. Nice for when rear passengers need to charge cell phones/watch dvd players and such
Hope you guys like it! This is my pride and joy and I use the interior to advertise my private side business. I specialize in automotive electrical and audio installation. My Jeep has a full viper alarm and remote start system, everything is linked through one key fob. Press one button and the jeep starts, press another and the headlights turn on to light my way to the jeep, I could go on and on.
Nothing too spectacular. Mag light mounted on the cent console, Cobra 19 CB, and the switch for my roof lights is on of those toggle switches that looks like it might control missiles on a fighter jet.
someone needs to make a mold of the headliner board and then produce a few in fiberglass or something. I wish I had a board to recover. I'm thinking of just using a really thin piece of wood, like paneling or something as the board and just covering that. Any suggestions?
