Xj cargo capacity

Im just curious if any of you guys with the Cherokee, ever run into problems not being able to haul or carry as much as you would like. I realize they aren't meant for towing or throwing stuffin in the back like a truck. I'm just curious if you ever run into problems not being able to carry as much. I have a ford ranger and don't use it as a truck enough but do go offroad that's why I'm planning on getting a Cherokee. That and they have so much better offroad support.
I'm sure many of you have both a truck and the jeep but for those who don't do you think the XJ has enough carrying capacity. I'm pretty well set on getting one but was just curious. I'm thinking I could still tow a small trailer with a motorcycle or throw a dead deer on top if I needed to. Anybody use there Cherokee for hunting?

I don't think you'll have any problems doing the tasks described with a stock cherokee.
I'm kind of a truck driving guy but prefer my 96XJ for daily driver tasks because it's a lot more maneuverable. The 500lb cargo rating was a bit light for my daily needs so I made some leaf spring adjustments while lifting it up a bit. A 3" lift Rusty's full leaf pack along with an added 3" full length Rough Country AAL yielded around 5" lift. Front and rear Warn bumpers and a winch took it back down closer to 4", which fits 31's nicely w/o trimming.
End result is about what you'd expect, it rides like a truck and hauls like one too which suits my needs nicely. Flex is reasonable and adequate.
If you're not doing a lot of heavy hauling, adding a leaf for capacity sake probably isn't necessary.

Apparently I don't have any good full pics with the bumpers on but here's what it looked like prior to them.

Not my deer, but I have hauled one on top of my 87XJ.

I love my xj. Works perfect. With 33s and stock gearing this is the most ill pull but its not to bad at all. Stock its nothing. Dad used to pull a 19' boat with his. I throw tons of stuff in mine. 2 bikes, 2people and all camping and riding gear.

Before my tires

Dogs

Always in back

Old jeep moving out my apt.

Even dragged a "hemi" mega cab through all this on 235 street tires lol

So yes I think an xj will work perfect for u lol

I went camping for a few days a while back and I'll say that with four people in the XJ it's not so easy to carry everyone's stuff without having a roof rack, trailer, or hitch rack. We managed, but also had another car meeting us and they had to bring a couple things we had to leave behind. Apart from some situation like that I never have space issues, but on a daily basis the most I have is a action packer tote and a couple longboards.

I use mine as a truck half the time. I've had the back loaded up with axles, a good 4-500lbs of scrap, fire wood and at one time almost 10 cinderblocks. Anything that can't fit inside will normally go on the rack. Yes I have had my Jeep looking like it came from the Beverly Hillbillies on more then one occasion. For towing, All I've is towed a 5x8 utility trailer loaded down with a big ol lawn tractor and a bunch of other lawn equipment and strap towed a 57' cadillac for about a 1.5 miles up hill without an issue.

I appreciate the responses, and the pics help to. Like I said I'm pretty well set on getting one and eventually doing a 3 or 4.5 in lift and other goodies.. The trailers in the pics look like about what like what I would get for a motorcycle to.

I just picked up a hitch tray at Harbor Freight to carry extra camping gear. $75 to carry up to 500lbs more gear seemed pretty good to me.

Bow Down to my Cargo Capacity

My XJ is not only my daily driver, and Weekend Warrior, but also my means to transport all my DJ gear for when I do events.
Here's a couple shots from a couple of the last car shows I did.
Note: whats loaded is this:
2x 15" subs,
2x 15" mains
2x 12" monitors
2x speaker tripods
2 large totes (cords, cables, lighting, etc...
2x turntables in flight cases
1x 4ch mixer in flight case
1x 12u rack case
1x 8u rack case
1x 4u rack case
1x laptop bag
1x duffle bag of multiple CD Books
1x backpack of misc stuff
1x milk crate of records
2x 6' banquet tables
1x 4' banquet table
1x (13'x13') E-Z-up
1x (8'x8') E-Z-up
1x bar stool
....and there's probably more, but thats the jist of it.
And yup, it ALL goes in the cherokee.
I AM the Tetris MASTAHHH

So to all you sissies who are afraid of loading up your Cherokee's because your too scared that the leaf springs will pop and the tires will go flat....
BEHOLD! It can be done.
(ps) - there are JF members here that will testify that yes indeed I fit all this - and in a single trip - in my XJ... the second pic is from the "First Annual Don't Fear The Jeeper" event in Vancouver Wa. July of 2011

I'd like to see a pic of all this crammed in your XJ if you've got one?
