Would you build a Limited Trail rig?

We just replaced my wife's 98 Limited Cherokee with a Commander. The old cherokee has 215,000 but is near pristine for that kind of milage. Is there such a thing as too nice to rig?

I am thinking about selling it. It would make a great ride for a high school kid.

If it's in good shape I wouldn't. There are hundreds of trail worthy rigs for every XJ in nice driveable shape. I couldn't take care of something and keep in it good shape for years to just just trash it on trails or turn it over to some ******* kid who's not going to appreciate it.

Got anyone in the family around 16? If so I'd give it to them on the condition they help you fix anything wrong with it and learn about it before giving it to them. Make them appreciate it and know how to fix it.

Not really. It is a very nice ride. Straight body no rust. Its gonna need some new seals and suspension bushings. Probably could use some shocks, 214,000 and running the originals

I bought it new, I think it is going to be harder to let go than I thought. I was gonna build a rig out of it a few years ago. still have the AJ Offroad 3/8 sliders that I didn't have the heart to install.

Anyone interested in those? Already been metal eched primed and herculined.

I got my Sport for $1600 w/ 130k miles. I wouldn't say it was mint, but it was damn nice. It's a trail rig now, and well, I've cut on it a little and beat on it a lot....

Might go against the popular opinion, but I think so.

I got an 01 WJ Limited because I wanted to offroad with some comfort. I ended up finding one in such nice condition at such a great price, I'm having a hard time taking the plunge and modding it all to hell, let alone tearing it up on the trail. I'm thinking about selling it and buying two that are in half as good condition (or just keeping it as a DD & finding a project Jeep).

That being said, if I had enough money to swing it, I'd buy a Jeep in the best possible condition to turn into a rig (better maintained means less stuff to worry about, and I kinda prefer the Expedition style offroading anyway).

Not even the same. WJs are a lot newer and much easier to find. They don't hold their value nearly as well, they didn't quality for Cash for Clunkers so there's a lot of supply. You can pick up a pristine WJ with ~100k on it around here for $2-3k all day long.

While I agree with Motor - if you don't have any family to pass it down to and you think it'll be hard to let it go, then why not detail it to trail rig status? You probably know the Jeep inside and out which makes repairs easier and you can take it places you never would have before. Plus, starting off with a truck that's straight and true with no rust puts you ahead of most wheelers out there. Just a thought.

Is it to nice to wheel?

No, look in the build section. People wheel brand new Wranglers all day.

You've had the jeep since new. If you pass it down to someone else what do you think they're going to do to it? My guess is probably mod it...

I say build it... You DON'T have to beat it up on the trails.

^This. Wheeling doesnt mean you have to beat the piss out of it.

Besides, I couldnt imagine the kind of attachment I would have to an XJ if I had owned it since new!

Haha once I build some sliders Im going to beat the piss out of those and whatever happens after that just happens. All it takes is one good dent to get the "well **** it" attitude started. Poor poor sheetmetal after that haha.
