Because after my dad approved of me getting a 944 or late 80's Supra, my mom shot that down completely. Then they agreed it would be best to put me in a big rolling box of American steel. Couldn't be happier.

I bought my XJ because my family has a history with Jeeps. When I was a kid we had a 1987 XJ four banger 4-speed. We traveled all over the place in it, towed my Dad's race car to races and four wheeled it to go backpacking, fishing or camping on a regular basis. My Mom and Dad were the original owners of it and we put over 250,000 miles on it before it was totaled by some idiot side swiping it with a Saturn. We then had a 1998 XJ Sport 4.0 AW4. We had that for about 6 years until my brother and I started complaining regularly about the lack of leg room in the back seat. So in 2001 it was replaced by a 2001 Ford F-250. Well, a few years down the road in college, I realized that living in Colorado was not the best place to own a POS 4banger 2wd Toyota Tercel (my first car). So I sold it after my freshman year and picked up my 99 XJ with 119,000 on the clock. It was all dented up and had bad paint but as soon as I laid eyes on it I was in love. So besides family history, I guess I bought my XJ becasue I needed a realiable 4x4 with plenty of space to carry my bikes, skis and other outdoor equipment. I have drvien the XJ through countless Colorado snow storms, endless 4x4 mountain passes, many Moab trails and countless road trips to many places to bike, clmib or hike across the country. It has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned and even though it may not be pretty (I hit a deer last winter and have yet to color match my new fender and front fiberglass) I still love her to death.

I was in high school and had my 86 Cutlass project going on and was driving my parents spare '01 Dodge Dakota. The truck was nice but I wanted my own vehicle to drive to school instead of my parents. The Cutlass was engineless and being torn apart so I started looking around. My friend had a 98 Cherokee that he had bought a couple months before and said nothing but good about it since he got it. I had a couple other thoughts about what I wanted but kept looking around for Cherokees and found my first XJ at a stealership, but as fate would have it I wasn't aboe to be there for the sighning of the paperwork but my stepdad was so he got it all done but actually driving it off the lot. Well the night before we went to pick it up, my parents show up at work in an older 92 Limited from a buy here pay here and had me take it on a test drive. It was awsome, leather, power everything and felt great, but I was mad because I didn't know why they bothered doing this because we had already got the one at the dealer....well we never took delivery sooooo we canceled with them(they were pissed) it is amazing how rude and snotty a kissass stealership will get when you do this...
Anyway, it was way cheaper and sooo much better. Unfortunately, it being abused through high school and into college it developed a lot of problems....most all of them my fault, so I sold it. I will not treat this one the same, with all I have learned and with the help of great forums like this, I will make my 95 last.

The way i ended up with my first XJ was through a trade. I had 2000 chevy blazer that had a motor knock and some lady had a 95 cherokee. She had a shoulder operation and couldnt drive stick anymore. She asked if i wanted to trade and she would have someone put a motor in the blazer. So i traded my beat blazer for a 1995 cherokee SE,5-speed,4x4 with 82k miles on it. That was my favorite vehicle i ever owned.I put 38k on it in 8 months and then an old lady rear ended me and totaled it. So i bought a 2000 cherokee with 160k and it was a peice of **** so i kept it 4 months and sold it then went XJless for a while and traded my 98 subaru for a 92 laredo. I was wheeling that and put a whole in the oilpan and didnt realize i because the oil pressure guage didnt work so i blew that motor. Went XJless again for a while then my 89 oldsmobile 88 died at 264k so i bought my current 2000 in august. Mint condition,130k,$4500. I like this one almost as much as my 95 but this one is here to stay

I had a mercury cougar and was sick of that car being made fun of. Also, I needed something to get me from Houston to Chicago. My XJ was perfect for both.

My friend has a 87 944... it is the most complicated jigsaw puzzle I could ever imagine.. We are trying to replace the rear main seal.. according to the book it is 16 hrs labor from a shop.. so yeah. That means its real fun to do in a cramped garage with no lift and no air tools (yet.. both sound like a good investment now, lol). He bought another car so he could fix the rear main on the porsche... So be happy with your good ol xj..

I bought my xj because I needed somethign better. I started with a 97 corrolla. Out grew (literally) that after not much time, so I upgraded to a 00' ford ranger. That was cool for a while, I fit great. It actually had a little power under the hood, but it lacked passenger space (doesn't mean we didn't put 5 people in it from time to time) and was only 2wd with street radials. I got stuck on wet grass once.. that was enough to cement that the ranger just didn't cut it. (got stuck in the snow too.. but I had chains luckily so I got out of that one without a pull)
I still loved the ranger, it was so usefull. So I went looking for 4wd ranger. Wasn't finding anything in the price range. and actually tripped over cherokees on craigslist. Well.. the rest, as they say, is history.

Couldn't be happier with the descision!! We still have the ranger because somebody in the family needs a truck (and gas was $4+ a gallon when we were trying to sell it..) And my dad wont listen that a Comanche would be better .

ever since i was about 10 i wanted a jeep cherokee because my dad bought a new 00. i remember going with him to fill out the paper work for it. before that my mom had a 91 xj. so when i got my permit i went nuts trying to find the perfect cherokee... well since im into dirt biking i figured a pick up truck would be good... so a comanche was the perfect choice! so about 2 weeks before my 17th b day i found a 90 comanche 5" lift and 31s. bought it. i loved the truck! but after about 3-4 months the truck just wasnt cutting it, there wasnt any room in it and i could only fit 1 friend. plus when it broke down i drove my dads 00 xj sport. and i really liked it. so i sold my comanche and bought the 01 i have now! i do miss the MJ but the XJ is just so much more practical since the day i bought my XJ i havent regreted it one bit. now im saving for a lift

I'm a wedding photographer. I live in Wisconsin.

Who wants to tell a bride 'I'm sorry, the snow is keeping me from shooting your wedding'? Yea, not me.
Last year alone the XJ paid for itself in being a mechanized mountain goat. That and being able to haul my gear plus an assistant and their gear is freaking awesome.

Also, most grooms relax a little when they see the cargo rack, lights, and a little bit of lift Great ice breaker.

I practically grew up in my Jeep. Parents bought it new in 1992 on base when we lived in Germany, and we drove all over the place in it. Nearly escaped death in it when we did a 360 on the Autobahn (another story in itself). Anyway, it got shipped over here in 2000 when we moved, and pretty soon the question of what I was going to drive came. Since we were going to need another car anyway, I was given the choice of either picking another used car, or getting the XJ. Picked the XJ immediately, because I'd always thought it was badass, I didn't feel like looking for something else, and it was useful for just about anything.
