What is the point?

Whats the point of the fiber cloth thing under the hood? I cant for the life of me tell.

Your hood will get hot - quite hot. I know because mine doesn't have any insulation and before I crafted hood spacers on a good hot day of wheelin the hood was almost to the point of needing gloves to open it.

On the other hand after wheeling the hot hood is a great place to cook up cheesesteaks.

A friend of mine took his off and it got hot enough to start peeling clear coat and putting cracks in the color paint. But I'm sure it's different for each jeep and environment.

Mine has not had one since at least 2001. While the paint now looks horrible on my hood, that was caused by sun damage from years of exposure. Take it off if you want op.

I took mine off. Yes, my hood does get hotter but I think with the insulation gone, the engine compartment cools off a little quicker. Also, I am planning on putting in some vents in the near future.
Mine started shredding when I had a belt go, that is what really got me to take mine out.

This is exactly what will happen. Your hood will look like crap, it comes down to whether you care about your eternal appearance.

My XJ has never had the cloth under the hood and the paint is perfect, minus trail scratches. Its a 2001 so it could be to young to see the effects but it does get wheeled all year and gets hot. On long stops I pop the hood to let it cool down a little extra. Helps to keep the cyl 3 misfire from occuring

Maybe after 15 years or so my 98 still looks good and I haven't had the insulation pad since ive owned it which as been about 11 years and he gets wheeled and hot.
