What to pay for a 4.10 HP30?

HOPEFULLY my last axle swap advice request: Looking to compare regearing an LP30 vs buying an expensive HP30.

Okay, so I need to regear my front end to 4.10 to match my new rears. I started looking into an HP30 swap because I though I might be able to have it for a similar or lower price to regearing the LP if I found one with 4.10's.

Here's my guess on the LP:
Parts: R&P and New Carrier - 300ish
Labor: 450ish (I don't have the tools or experience unfortunately).

I haven't been able to find ANY 4.10 HP30's (in fact I've only found a couple of LP30's) at local yards. I can't fabricate, so I'm really not looking at any non bolt-in swaps. What I have found is an appropriate axle ('97 4.10 HP30 w/ABS) that can be delivered to my door for $800.

That seems like a small fortune for a stock used axle, especially one I haven't seen, but it's not far off from the cost of regearing the LP. Is this too much to pay? What would you consider reasonable? I honestly expected to be able to find one to pull for 150-200, or a pulled one for 400-500, but I could be way off there.

Thanks for any input on what you would do in my place, or corrections on my pricing guesses. I'm also assuming that I can put an ABS axle in a non-abs XJ. Let me know if I've missed something there.

MODS: Sorry I wasn't sure if this was in the right place, let me know if I should post this sort of thing in Non-technical.

Well you can buy or you can wait till your able to find one you can pull, which is more important to you? $600-$700 or a month or so of waiting? Also if you know what vehicle year and model has that axle stock some of the you pull it places such as pull-a-part, my local yard, will let you request a vehicle and do their best to locate one for you so I would give that a shot first personally.

That must be nice. Most of the yards here I can't even get to answer the phone.

I think I found one locally for a lot less! Although, the last time someone with that particular accent told me they had what I needed I got there and they had one grand cherokee on the lot, no XJ's that wasn't the part I asked for even if I had been shopping for a ZJ. The time before that I was looking for parts for the KJ disc brake swap, finally found a yard willing to let me pull apart a KJ axle, and the damned thing had drums even though I asked THREE times if they were sure it was a disc-equipped model. But hey, it's farther than I've gotten so far.

Fyi: A ZJ has the same front setup as an XJ.

That was for a completely different part. And if I'm not mistaken the ZJ only ever came with the Low-Pinion axle and never with the 4.10 ratio.

My need is to get the front to 4.10, my desire is to swap to an HP. So unless I'm missing something badly (which is very possible), no ZJ axle is going to help me.

Do you not have a pull-a-part, you-pull-it, or pull-n-save anywhere near you?

Corpus Christi and El Paso pullapart locations both have a few cherokees although what is on them is anyone's guess. Also I think you have some pull-n-save places in Dallas?

Check this site http://www.picknpull.com/check_inventory.aspx or www.pullapart.com and you can check their inventories near you for specific vehicles.

There's a few pull-a-part, upullit, etc.. around here. The problem is they never know what they have in stock and they're mostly at least an hour away. The ones I have had time to visit didn't have an HP 30 with a 4.10. I did find a couple of HP30's, but only in 3.55 and they wanted at least 300 for them despite mediocre condition (good housing but some rust, trashed brake parts and in one case a bent up UCA mount). That plus the cost of regearing (especially since I'd either have to pay someone to do it or buy tools and PRAY I don't grenade the front diff on my daily driver) was over what I was willing to spend just right now. I had a ceiling set on this project at $500, realized I was going to have to accept 7-800 if I can't find the right axle but I can't really bump it up again.

I've been actively hunting this axle for weeks (though I can only get to yards on saturdays), and I kept an eye out for one to pop up on part-out ads, craigslist and while I was in the yards for something else for the last year or so just in case I needed to stash a cheap part for later.

car-part.com is a wrecking yard search site. Should find it there for $500-600 plus freight if its not that close to you. Those 4.10 fronts are really rare, not many people opted for 4x4 with a 4cly.

I checked car-part after I came up empty at my favorite couple of yards. It couldn't find one within 500 miles of me, and most of the ones it did find said something to the effect of "4.0L, AT, CHECK RATIO" in the comments section. Which says to me it's a 4.0 w/AW4 and the only way it's a 4.10 is if someone swapped it in. Pretty sure those are just listed wrong. I found the one that would be delivered to my door for 800 (actually 790) through a similar service and that's the cheapest one I've found. Some even quoted me as high as 1250. Which is kind of funny because car-part did find a TJ Rubi 44 (supposedly 4.10) I could drive to for 1100. definitely not going to shell out more for an HP30 than a 44.

Set a Saturday and hit whatever area has the most yards and try to hit as many as possible in one day. I know pullapart is typically very cheap at least here in MS

Been through a few such saturdays already, but I'm trying again this weekend!
