This weekend we're picking up my brother's first car (jeep).

We found him a 1987 2-door XJ with the 4 banger and a 5 speed for $750. Everything but AC works fine with over 200,000 on it. And most of the Rcoker panels are still there.

To some fellow Jeepers in warmer climates it may seem a steep price for a rusty old jeep, but compared to a few other Northern-Michigan Jeeps we looked at this one is a gem (for the price). I'm just happy we can find a reliable XJ for my brothers first vehicle.

He's paying for it himself with money he earned from delivering pizza's. He's 18 now, but this is the first vehicle he will actually own, and he's pretty excited to get to fix it up.

The first order of business, barring any other issues being uncovered, is taking care of the rust.

Well we got it on Sunday. Looks better than I thought on the outside, drivers floor is bad though. Drove it home from Marquette with no problems. I had my brother take pictures of it but he hasn't gotten them off the camera yet.

One thing that concerned me was when he was trying to get it up ramps in the driveway right after the trip, after he messed it up a few times (revving and stalling) it suddenly started smoking from the tranny tunnel pretty bad, no bad sound and no change in the tranny feel or engine.

There was a ton of grime on the trans and bellhousing, could that have been what was actually smoking, the grime? We powerwashed it after it cooled off so hopefully we won't repeat that.

It probably the rear of the valve cover leaking onto the clutch or the clutch its self.

The valve cover was recently replaced, so maybe it isn't sealed well or it's burning off existing oil on it from before.

I'm willing to bet there's not many '87 2dr xj's left still running the road nowadays.
Nice find.

first things first, never refer to a jeep as a CAR. it is an unstoppable offroad machine, or JEEP

Yeah, but if I said first JEEP, it implies that he has owned other vehicles.

my first vehicle was a 85 2dr 5spd.... In near mint condition. Man, that reminds me, the early 1gen XJ had those sweet rocking front seats. I miss those. I would still own that XJ had bambi not totaled it for me...

Well he took pictures and never got around to uploading them, so I'm doing it.

Pretty rust free exterior.

Decent interior. PO put in an after market oil pressure gauge.

Has a Ford engine bay light under the hood.

And this is the one pretty rusty spot the drivers floorboards.

And the little 4 banger. My dad is working on it a bit, it's not getting spark and the coil and plugs are good, I suggested checking the CPS.
