Want to get back into Jeeps
Well, this is my first time back in the Jeep Forums in quite awhile. This forum is an awesome resource and appreciate the support you guys have to offer. In 2008 I sold my beloved '98 XJ Sport and have regretted it ever since. I had been through so much with that thing. I purchased it 6 years ago as a 2WD and later on I bought a wrecked '97 4X4 donor and switched everything over to convert to 4WD (with the help of info found on the forum) I also installed a lift and larger tires. This was my daily driver but it also took on some pretty rough terrain on the weekends.
Unfortunately as gas prices spiked and I was getting 16 mpg (if that) I decided to sell it and get a car.
Well recently I've been itching to get another Jeep but this time it would be a secondary vehicle for camping trips, wheeling, and occasional winter driver when the roads get too slick.
My build plans would be: 5.5" lift, 33"-35" tires, 4.88 gears, and front/rear Detroits. I have somewhat limited funds so after the initial purchase it would be a slow process but I wanted to ask your opinions, if it were you; What year XJ would YOU start with for a weekend wheeler?
Personally I like the style of '97-'01. KBB shows a private party value for a '99 with 150k miles (I'm assuming that's the average for something this old) as $3,500 which is about where my budget is but all I'm seeing in the ads (unless it's a POS) are $5k-7k??? Would it be worth trying to talk these guys WAY down or should I start looking at 91-96 to get back down to my price range?
