vote here for the April 2009 Cherokee of the Month

Entry #1

Sprintagogo
This is my 2000 XJ which I have owned for 2 years in April. It’s my first Jeep and follows a few Landrover Defenders, but I had to get something with proper seats for the kids. This was the cheap choice that turned out to be every bit as good as a kitted Defender. It is a 4ltr auto Cherokee Classic and came to me with a basic 2.5” lift and in need of some intensive maintenance. Jeep have only had an official Presence here in Great Britain since 1993 so used examples only really started to hit the enthusiast scene at the end of the 90’s which means the supply of aftermarket kit and accessories is still limited even now compared to the US. I have done loads of modifications and will list the important bits but I am sure to miss something and there is still other changes I want to make (are they ever really finished?).

*4.5” lift. Procomp 2½” leaves and springs with 2” spacer up front and extended shackles and a little block in the rear.

*Rubicon Express control arm drop brackets.

*Skyjacker fixed lower control arms re-tubed with heavier box section after damage.

*RE 1807 Hack & Tap with front driveshaft.

*3.55 ratio low pinion Dana 30 front and Dana 35 rear swapped out for 4.10 ratio high pinion front and 29 spline Chrysler 8.25 rear. Trac-loc LSD installed in rear.

*Mopar steering, T-case and tank skids from 1995 XJ.

*Roof ‘rack’ consisting of gutter slider bars for leaning against trees, mounts for fibreglass waffle bridging mats and mounts for 8 x front lights and 2 x reversing lights. Bolted through roof in 8 places with large spreader plates.

*Box section rockers welded in place of the original tin-plate rockers with points for hi-lift jacking.

*Warn 9.5XP winch with synthetic rope and mounted in my own home made bumper. Transmission oil cooler raised so winch can sit within 1/8” of front crossmember and recessed into grill.

*BFG Mud Terrains 245/75/16 and 40T speedo gear to correct reading.

* Relocated front brake flexy hoses and YJ rear flexy.

Quite proud of the truck I have built and had to fab many bits myself due to limited choice and availability on this side of the pond. Also, all the work I have done has had to account for the fact that my wife drives this truck to work and back everyday so had to maintain some civility for her sake. Come on guys, vote for me, you know you want to!

Classic. I say he should be disqualified! Sprintagogo gets my vote for that reason alone.

Crikey, I wish I had the 'budget' for the items BMYOHN has bought and fitted. Now I have a wife and kids I really now the meaning of small disposable income!!!

I feel a butt kicking coming my way but never mind, it's the taking part that counts?

As I said above I was sure to miss somethings off the description so here's a few extra points that have occured to me since I submitted my entry.

Clearly, a Safarigard snorkel which has been thoroughly tested.
Optima yellowtop battery
Dash mounted winch controls and plug for wander lead so winch can be used from drivers seat or outside the vehicle.
Roof lights are 8 x 55watts 4x spot light for distance and 4 x fog light for spread.
CB radio for trail talk.
Hands free phone kit and Pioneer 4x50w CD/MP3 player
KJ rear discs will be fitted in about 1 weeks time. Frustratingly I only had the rear axle in pieces about 4-5 weeks ago to fit the Trac-lok LSD and if I had known I would find a Liberty rear disc set so soon I would have waited and installed both at once.

Other plans for the near future are to make a solid rear bumper. Tires will be swapped for a set of 235/85R16's (32") or maybe 255/85R16's (33.3") not decided yet.

The 8x55w lights draw around 35 amps so the 124 amp stock alternator together with the optima don't have any problems here.

Please ask any questions and I will lurk around to answer them and see how badly I am doing

Sprint,

Killer rig, and built with kids in mind! Cheers to you.

I'm impressed with the space saving winch location.
