like the title says..what was the vehicle you had before your xj?

vehicle - 1996 Chrysler Sebring JX convertible

mods - nothing really. infinity stereo system with 6 disc changer, cobra 5 stage alarm system, thats about it

background - my parents got it from some guy and they paid off his lease. it had 10,000 miles on it at the time. they had it as a weekend cruiser but after they sold the durango, it became a daily driver. ever since it had become a daily driver, i started taking care of it because at the time, i was like 10 and back then, it was like a camaro to me (had no real idea what power was all about). i washed it every week and waxed it once a month and when i was 12, started doing oil changes on it every 3k. a week before i got my license, my parents offered it to me for $2,000.

i took them up on it and payed $1,000 and said id pay the other $1,000 off in a month when i made the money (had just gotten my new job). i did and a month later, i found my jeep at the local jeep dealership and put the car on craigslist the same night i saw the jeep. sold the sebring a week after i bought the jeep. and i have no regrets. :)

pictures

to keep it xj related, im gonna work on mine tomorrow.

In order from oldest to newest:
1964 Chevy Impala - Amazing car - sold it to pay for a year of college
1966 Chevy Stepside - Never should have sold this
1969 Ford GT Torino - First car - got it when I was 12
1972 Volkswagen Super Beetle - Ugly, but fun to drive
1972 Volkswagen Westfalia - Lots of fun - great investment. Sold this to buy my Cherokee and camper
1973 Volkswagen Super Beetle - Second fastest thing I ever drove (137 mph paced against my Jetta).
1983 Chevy Monte Carlo - Got me through a few years in college - sold that to buy my first Jeep
1983 Chevy Silverado - Only had it for three months - found out it was a totaled vehicle that had been rebuilt
1983 Oldsmobile Cutlass - High school graduation present - only had if for 27 days before a drunk woman rear-ended me
1987 Jeep Grand Wagoneer - First Jeep - never should have sold it.
1987 Ford Bronco - one word: PILE.
1989 Ford Bronco - Loved it - just needed two more doors
1991 Ford Taurus - Yawn
1991 Jeep Cherokee (current) - my 7-year old has already laid claim it...
1988 GMC S-15 - Biggest POS I ever owned - only time I came close to shooting a vehicle
1993 Ford Taurus - Bought as a replacement for totaled 91 Taurus. Darn drunks...
1995 Saturn Wagon - Great gas mileage, but too small. - traded it in for my Wrangler
1995 Jeep Wrangler - Ahhhh, the Jeep…..
1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee (current) - Bought it to slow down the wife and to make room for baby
1997 Volkswagen Jetta GLX - Fastest thing I've ever driven. Once hit 152.
2001 F150 Super Crew (current). Bought this to pull the camper. Doubt I'll ever sell it.

93 Chevy Z24 (first car, wrecked)
84 Pontiac Fiero 2M4 (still sitting in garage, waiting to be restored during retirement)
89 Chevy Cavalier RS (Sold it last year, needed a clutch at 230,xxx miles and wasn't worth as much as the clutch assembly)
82 Chevy S-10 (V8 swap, first hotrod, dissassembled to build 84 camaro)
88 Chevy C-10 (very nice V8 Cheyenne from NC, no rust, traded for 89 Camaro)
84 Camaro (V6 to V8 swap, sitting in garage waiting for me to put tranny back together)
89 Camaro RS (Mint condition t-top car with 92,xxx on the clock, sitting in garage waiting for me to wash/wax it this weekend)

I've had a few other cars sitting around, including 2 Merkur XR4Ti's, a few other 3rd gen F-body's for parts, and a pair of S-10's for parts. I also had 3 pickups when I was in school that dad bought for me to play with, a 75 GMC 4x4, and two 76 Chevy 2wd's.

My life in auto terms can be summed up in three phases

Phase one - 2nd gen Firebirds, owned five between 1974 and 1998 including three Trans Ams.

Phase two - Turbo Mopars, owned three of these from 1986 to today. Still have a '86 Daytona Turbo Z
that I take to shows and cruises. 6,900 original miles. These cars are a blast to drive.

Phase three - Jeep, sold my 1986 Chrysler Laser to buy the '99 Cherokee. I ordered my first Jeep way back in
1978 (CJ-7) but I could not sell my car before the Jeep came in. Every time I bought a car I would think about a Jeep but I never took the plunge until 1999.

Phase four - Chances are that I will replace the XJ with new Wrangler and continue phase three. If not
I do like the Subaru Legacy GT turbos, seem like a good combo with the turbo power
and the awd. If I go that route I will keep the Jeep though.

I won't begin to put up every car I've owned but I'll post the last two...

This vehicle I just sold 6mos ago. Had big plans for it but I had to make a financial decision and sell it. :(
1970 VW Type 3 Fastback

I sold this one to buy the Jeep... Unfortunately I couldn't afford both, I LOVED this car. W/mods it was around 300hp. When cruising down the road around 75mph, a firm stomp on the right pedal would move this car over 100mph in the blink of an eye. The cardomain link is in my sig, you can see all the things I did to it. It was bone stock when I started.
2001 Acura 3.2CL Type-S

All gone for the love of this...

Ultimately, I am an air-cooled VW guy at heart.

<----- air-cooled for life.

My last vehicle before the XJ was a sweetly tricked out 1995 YJ. Man I loved that thing! 2 kids later the closest thing I could get was my XJ. It has grown on me and now I would sell it.
