V1GiLaNtE's 98' Classic Build Thread

Hey guys.. New here. Always liked Cherokees but finally bought one on a whim and so far I'm loving it. Thanks in advance for the help and support I'm sure I'll receive from this community.

Sold the my VW Passat a week ago. Went back and forth on what to buy.. oh what to buy.. Went on a complete ADD whim and ended up buying this 1998 Jeep Cherokee Classic.

Found it on CL in Fredricksburg. Called the guy Wed talked it over and was able to make the trip yesterday. Guy was asking $3250. After test drive gave him $2900 cash and drove her home.

I was stunned at for it's age it was actually in really good condition. Owned by an older retired gentleman living in NY so his daughter and son-in-law were selling it for him.

Specs:
1998 Jeep Cherokee Classic auto
190k on the body and only 60k on a new engine installed last year(one of the cleanest engine bays I have seen)
Sport wheels with full size spare.
FACTORY HEADUNIT w/ cassette & CD. (didn't know this was an option)
Transmission shifts smooth and 4wd works great.
Minimal underbody rust(none in typical Jeep areas that I have heard of)
Heat and AC work great( passat didn't have Heat)
Factory Tint
Factory Remote

The funniest thing about it is somebody painted little grateful dead bears on both driver and passenger side doors. I thought they were stickers but realized they are actually painted.. Am I JDM with "Adult Pedo-Bears"?

Overall I'm really happy with it. Complete 180 from what I'm used to with the Passat but it rides well, feels solid, and will definitely bring me some really good times..

Current Plans
Just drive until I figure out what maintenance it needs exactly. Removed all the stickers off of it and am going to Seafoam her when I get the chance.

Near Future Mods
-Hella 500 lights
-Upgrade headlight harness
-Find factory skid plates
-Find factory fog switch
-Find install Class III hitch
-Install CB and antenna
-Roof rack
-Can't decide on a 2" budget boost lift or just say screw it and get 3"
-Beefier tires. Most likely 31x10.5

Anyways enough with the chatter on to the pics..(what you really care about)

First time I have ever named one of my cars(I dunno so don't ask)

Meet Keli

PEDO FTW...

Stayed tuned for the next episode in this exciting documentary..

So Hella 500's are ordered already...

Here's an interesting question that hopefully somebody can chime in on.. I realized my AC only blows on setting 4 at full blast. 1,2,3 don't blow anything at all.. Anybody got an idea what this could be?

resistor for blower motor

read this for everything

if it is typical maintenance, common breakdown, modifications etc. you'll usually find it there

since you're new to these parts, post #11 contains THIS THREAD about fixing your blower motor.

you should also read the stock specs sticky when you can - lots of FAQ there too.

Your new jeep is pretty shiny - I remember when I washed and waxed mine too.

FYI - the XJ is not a FSJ - those cherokees were built in the 60's and 70's.

Wow that thing is clean. Looks like it has 50k on it instead of 193k.

so how come "build threads" don't actually contain any BUILDING in them anymore?? They seem to always be filled with dreams, and list of future mods that never happen or change 10 times before they actually turn a wrench...then I have to sift over the dozens of "build threads" to find some actual meat to see what the newest JF generation is doing.....

Welcome to the forum, and your jeep is nice.....but get your hands dirty before starting a BUILD THREAD, he!!...build a sammich at least.

Unfortunately the "building" doesn't happen all in one day. Otherwise it wouldn't be called building.. Kind of like fishing.. it's called fishing for a reason and not "catching". That's the way things go. But thanks for the welcome and maybe I can live up to your build expectations as I have the time to do research, purchasing, waiting for parts to arrive, more research, install said parts, document install of said parts, and then post to teh Interwebz for your viewing pleasure....

How do you think we discover what mods we want to do/ discover what items need to be replaced.. I'm not telepathic with my cars so generally I have to get under it to figure out what's the issue/find a branching off point to improve items... That's why I like working on my own vehicles.

I see your point, but don't follow the logic.

Fishing, and catching are two different animals. You must fish to catch, and fishing does not always end in catching.

Building, and built are two different animals. You must build to be built, and building does not always end in built.

Ahhh....But building DOES result in having something built...so this comparison doesn't work.

Maybe this should be a "research, purchasing, waiting for parts to arrive, more research" thread.

I'm sure your "build" thread will pan out...once something has actually been done. With that being said...I'm taking the rest of the day off and going Catching.

I'm jealous you can do that.. I understand if you want to keep it a secret but let us know where there is a body of water where you can just sit back, relax, and catch all day. I'd love to visit there sometime.Hope you're releasing the others once you've caught your limit. Game Wardens are a B*$%H

So I think at this point I have my lighting issues squared away which was part of my phase 1 buildup which also included maintenance items needed.

Ordered
_______

- Hella 500 Driving lights
- Upgraded HD Relay Harness
- Blower Motor Resistor

Dropping it off tomorrow to get an inspection with my mechanic. I want him to look at specifically the brakes pulsate slightly which I want to point to a pads/rotors issue so I may have to replace them. My powersteering is kinda funky. It works and is smooth but it's jerky and needs a little help returning to straight ahead position. This could be a number of things based upon my initial research. Hopefully my mechanic will help diagnose the problem/you jeep guys here.
SO potential fixes here in the future:

Pads/Rotors/Drums
Powersteering issue

I have slight death wobble but what Jeep doesn't.. This doesn't really bother me at all and won't until it gets so bad it shakes the teeth out of my head.
Patiently waiting for the man in Brown to show up..
